I usually just focus on something I do like about the baby, like “he has the greenest eyes” or something like that. THat way I am not lying but I am not hurting the parent’s feelings either.

In my line of work I have to say something all the time!!! I see lots and lots of FLKs (Funny looking kids) in my line of work :).  It’s always hard, but I’ve come up with a series of things I say such as,

“Oh, he’s such a little peanut!” or

“You must just adore him so much” or

“Babies are so precious, aren’t they?”

Sometimes I’m able to say,

“Oh she’s adorable!” even if she isn’t necessarily a good looking baby, just because she does something endearing when I look at her.  I feel like it all just rolls off the tongue effortlessly these days after years of practice!  (And absolutely no lies here!)

Oh, s/he’s so tiny!

haha, great question. Most babies aren’t that cute for a little while anyway, so talking about how small their hands or feet or something are seems to get me thru. 😛

I lie. Ugly babies are just one of those situations in which you have to lie.

I don’t like lieing in general of course, but I think the “ugly baby” is one of those situations you get a free pass on.

I used to be a photographer, and oh wow, when people came in with ugly babies, it was a bad situation. You just have to be fake. No one wants to hear that their babies are ugly.

Plus, you have to keep good baby karma.

I’ve known some gosh-darn ugly babies that turned into beautiful little people!  Odd how that happens….

I was an ugly baby.  I have huge eyes and everyone said I just looked like a furbie.  She said people used to look in the stroller and then gasp and jump back! lol…. Whatever, now I get compliments on my eyes about 3 or 4 times a week. literally.

Rock on ugly babies!  Things may just work out in your favor!!!!

LOL @ good baby karma!

I’ll try and say something like, “Oh I think they have your eyes or nose or whatever.”  Something neutral.

I think a lot of babies look weird when they’re first born and get cuter later on!!

LOL @ VirginiaMarie –

“I just looked like a furbie.” – I bet you’re glad you have big eyes now! I wish I had big eyes!

side note: did you know that babies eyes and adult eyes are the same size? They never change. It’s because having large eyes is a “baby” characteristic in both people and animals, and it’s to help incite feelings of “protection” towards the infant? I thought that was so cool when I found out 🙂 I’m sure most people already know this, but I’m sharing just in case!

I usually just pick some other quality, “Oh, how darling/precious/adorable/what a sweetheart!” etc.  I agree that honesty about their looks should not be commented on!

My niece was darn ugly as a baby because my SIL has thyroid issues.  She had these crazy buggy eyes!  We’d usually say “She looks just like you!”  And then they were both happy, LOL!
