I keep seeing commercials for Davids Bridal’s dress sale going on right now, so I browsed their website to see what it was all about. They have some nice dresses that are exactly what I would like and they are def priced really well!!
The other evening, the commercial came on again, and I jokingly said to my SO “i should go buy me a dress…hahaha” He nonchalantly says “go ahead”. Well, I was NOT expecting that reaction.
Later we were chit chatting and I said “were you serious earlier about the dress?” He says “Yeah, I don’t care what you do. You know it’s coming, you just don’t know EXACTLY when”
My heart went flitter flutter and I thought, OMG I could go try dresses on tomorrow!! The problem is, I have this thought in my mind that I want my bridesmaids and Mother-In-Law there to experience the moment with me.(kind of like on ‘Say Yes to the Dress’) I know any of my bridesmaids would totally go with me now, but there is no way I would ask his mom to go…she may look at me crazy since I don’t have a ring yet, or go around telling the family I’m looking at dresses and it could all get blown up.
Overall, I think I have decided to wait a few more months(our timeline) and hope they have the types of dresses I want at another sale.
Does anyone know how often David’s has these sales? What would you do in my situation?

In my opinion, I would wait until I was engaged, because that may be in back of your mind during your shopping and you don’t want anything to be incomplete during that special time. Also, if you want the big experience with your family, I would wait until you can have that and not worry about a sale that you are seeing. There’s always more sales! At the same time, it can’t hurt browsing online though so you are ready for your big shopping day now can it? 🙂 Have fun!!!

Don’t do it. David’s has sales all the time, another one will come. Take it on step at a time- planning your wedding before you are even engaged kind of ruins it… the engagement becomes an after thought as you are already focused on the wedding.

No harm in looking…I dunno, I shopped 4 stores and would have been that much more stressed if I had started prior to the engagement, I would have had too many possibilities in my head. Even with 4 shops, I ended up with 5 possibilities and only decided my dress on Monday

Personally, I would wait. Engagement is a special time, and I’d save all of that fun wedding planning (like dress shopping) for when you’re actually engaged. I think dress shopping before I was engaged would have just lessened the excitement of actually beign engaged, if that makes sense. And yes, David’s Bridal has sales all the time.

I’d look online to get an idea of the dresses that you would like to try on after you get engaged (and thus lessen the hassle) but In My Humble Opinion, I would suggest that you hold off actually/physically shopping for a dress until then. Plenty of dress porn online to bode you over anyway

I’ve read that David’s has sales four times a year. If there is one specific dress you love than you might want to snap it up before it’s discontinued. Otherwise, it’s probably not worth missing out of the shopping experience you imagined.

Unless you plan to have a REALLY short engagement (less than 4-6 months), I’d wait. Beyond wanting the family experience, the kind of wedding dress you’d wear for a winter wedding in a huge cathedral is totally different than one you might wear for an outdoor summer BBQ wedding, and if you don’t have those details nailed down (not just “this is what I’d like”, but “this is what SO wants too”, “my family can reasonably get there at this time” and “we’ve put money down on a place so we KNOW this is what we’re doing”), you might fall in love with a dress that looks strangely out of place!

I would look online but don’t go in to try any on. Save that experience for when you are engaged officially.

Well, I happen to have a close friend who works at a bridal shop in town and I totally went in to try on dresses. It was actually her idea, and I mean really, it’s hard to say no to something so pretty! According to my friend, they have had ladies purchase dresses pre-engagement. Plus, I know that engagement is going to happen and our latest plans are to get married this summer. So there is a bit of a time crunch on my part so I want to have an idea of what I’m looking for so that when I go with my family and friends, it’s not overwhelming. It was only my sister and I, though; she came for moral support so I didn’t feel like a complete doofus. 🙂

I was so glad I waited until we were engaged. It’s just such a special time and you want it to be perfect.

@future.mrs.c: I would wait until after we got engaged. You kind of want to have the season, venue and type of wedding in mind when shopping for your dress.

Don’t do it! They have sales all the time! (unless, you’re planning to only be engaged for like 4 months or something.) Enjoy your engagement!
