@walnutgirl:  How is it pronounced? I’m from the states and would probably pronounce it “Gay-a”?

I would just personally pronounce it that way because my name starts with the letters “Cai” and is pronounced “Cay”.

I think it’s pronounced “Guy-a”. I think it’s beautiful and different!

I thought “Guy-yah”

I also had no association with the name?

I think of Captain Planet immediatly, the Sensei character in the show was named Gaia. I think most people in my age group (people who were kids in the 1990s) from the US would probably think of that show too, it was pretty popular. It is a pretty name though!

I would pronounce it “Guy-a” as well.

It’s pretty and different, would probably get mispronounced though. If you don’t mind that, then no big deal!

Gaia… I read the Percy Jackson books and Gaia is mother earth who was trying to kill everyone.  That’s what I’d associate it with.  Associations aside I think it’s a pretty name!

I think it’s a little hippie-dippie / new-agey, and that’s coming from a lefty treehugger 🙂  But still a very pretty name.

I can’t stand these new “trendy” names that you cannot pronounce if your life depended on it. (just my opinion)

I think it’s really pretty, but it is a little hippie-ish. And I really wouldn’t call it new or trendy, Gaia was a Greek goddess so the name has been around a long time.

My cousin’s name is Gaia (Guy-uh), and yes, it’s because her parents were new age-y hippie types. I’m not a fan, but I don’t know if that’s just mostly because I’m not a fan of her.

The first thing I thought of was the Greek goddess (so definitely not a “trendy” name, but it is a bit hippie).  Not really a fan.

I read the Fearless books in high school and the main character’s name was Gaia. I think it is a very pretty name. The only thing I have against it is the teasing on the playground because kids will want pronounce it as Gay-a. Plus the laughter when every substitute teacher pronounces it that way. There’s nothing wrong with the name. Just the fact that kids can be cruel and immature.
