I (a 20-something) am thinking about going by my middle name, Marie, for professional/practical reasons. My first name is difficult for people to say and spell and it is also similar to a well-known “normal” name that I always end up getting called. Kinda tired of it.
So I am thinking about just assuming Marie (I am just getting started in my career so I don’t think it would be TOO big of a deal yet.) What are your connotations with the name Marie? What does it make you think of? Who does it make you think of? Any pros or cons?
Oh, and I will still have a unique last name, so I think I will be easily google-able even though Marie is a pretty common name.
Thanks for the input!

It makes me think of my grandmother whose name is Marie. 🙂 She’s the only one I’ve ever known.
I think it’s a nice name if that’s what you want to go by.

I don’t have any strong feelings about it. It’s a standard/professional name.

That’s my mom’s name…so er…
and trust me, with Marie you’ll get lots of variations of pronounciation as well…..

I think Marie is a safe, traditional name that most people are familiar with and don’t have objections too. If you like it, do it.

It is the middle name of seriously 70% of people I know. That is my only thought on it.

I don’t know, I think I’d rather have a more unique first name?

@mattsgirl813: Mine too and agree on your statement. It’s also my grandaunt’s and my mom’s.

I love the name. I have a horribly unusual first name and I always wished I had changed it to Marie or Jennifer.
What other pronounciations are there for Marie?

I associate it with a middle name because I know a TON of people with the middle name Marie.

I’m also curious what other pronunciations there are for Marie! Weird.
And yeah, it is definitely the middle name of choice. I wonder why that is?
I do wish it was a *tad* less common, but having a really unique name sucks too. Hmm…

I think it would be a great career name. In my experience, it is easier to call someone with an easily pronounceable name, and people are more likely to return your calls. I used to use my formal name at work which is hard for people to understand and recently switched to my very americanized and easily recognizable nickname. The difference has been amazing. People can say and spell my name for the first time!
I also don’t have any preconceived notions of the name since it is so classic.

My middle name is Marie too…People constantly think it’s Mary.
As for changing to Marie, I think it’s a perfectly good name, but not memorable. I guess it depends on what you’re going for by changing it.

I think like 3/4 of my friend’s middle name is Marie, or they used it for their kid’s middle name. I don’t hear it much as a first name though.
