    Petra is a ugly name.

    Petra is a beautiful name.

Petra is just like any other name.

    Petra is really weird.

bibilicious :  I immediately thought of a dinosaur! It sounds like Petrie from the Land Before Time. 🙂 I doubt kids these days know about that movie though.

I would pronounce it Pet-chra, like petrol. It sounds like an Indian girl’s name to me.

I’m in the minority. I love feminine, antique names AND my Grandparents still speak Russian.

I however have always found that name to be very fitting for a poodle.

VictorianChick :  But that’s the thing – any name can be mispronounced. Petra is pretty simple to pronounce, and the variations mentioned on this thread have been minor.

aussiemum1248 :  They have been minior, but they have been there.

Look I’m just bringing it up since it isn’t a common name like Sally or Emma. If the child and the parents can handle the name being mispronounced, and at some point it WILL be, then fine.  How often will it be? Dunno.

UK-bee :  omg 😳 That was meant as “common name” not commoners’ (just learned the meaning now) name 🤗😂 Sort of on par with how many Emma or Josephine we had in our year, so nothing commoner as such about it, just several of them! In terms of extra posh names what springs to mind for me are names like Jacobi, Maximilian, Frederick, Milton (so not necessarily unusual) and also more ridiculous out there names that aren’t Really a name, I seem to have encountered a bunch of posh girls named India for some reason. For me I guess a name is more special when I haven’t met or personally known too many people with that name. I personally do like old school Swedish names from older generations that are basically out of fashion nowadays.

It makes me think of the oversexed house maid from the A Little Night Music musical.  But that might just be me 🙂

I knew a Greek girl at school called Petra.

    I also know a Petru.

I don’t think they’re pretty but it’s just my opinion

I have a father and brother named Peter, so i always loved the idea of having a daughter named Petra – the female version of Peter. I think it’s very classy, and I like that it’s an old name.
