So I’ve been trying to think of modern guestbook alternative ideas and have gotten a lot of inspiration from the boards here! I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned this idea, but what do you all think of a large wooden ampersand (“&”) with markers/sharpies for everyone to sign? We could display it in our house afterward.
I love the idea of having something to display instead of a book that won’t get looked at, won’t look pretty (I’ve seen books where signatures are all bunched up and other pages are blank), and I just wanted something a little different. The photo mat is an option but a little boring, and most weddings I’ve been to have the mat or the book. I also like the fingerprint tree idea but it might be a little too ‘out there’ for our older guests. So I figure something to sign is easiest, and a wooden ampersand is different. But, I have a few doubts/questions!
First off, would people do it?
Secondly, what size should I get?? Our wedding will be around 400 guests!
Lastly, do I need to get special markers to make sure it lasts a while?

I’ve never seen that done, although I don’t see why it wouldn’t be a good idea. I think people would sign it, you just may have to make an announcement or put a sign by it or something so people know what it’s for. As far as how big, well, I wouldn’t get something super huge or else it might be a pain to display.
What about using your initials too? For example, A & J? Or get a word, like LOVE.
I’m not very creative, but if you’re going to have 400 people and you don’t want the writing all scrunched, and if you don’t want just an ampersand to decorate your home with, you could try something like I mentioned…

Im not sure if I like it with just the &… I think it would be cuter/more meaningful if you guys did your initialas like Southerngirl said or LOVE or HOME or something like that.

I think with 400 guests you’ll definitely need more than just the &. It’s a great idea, I totally love it! The PPs had great ideas of using more letters.
We went semi-traditional (I guess you’d call it that) and had a 40 page 12″x12″ photo guest book printed with our engagement photos. I got a great deal through Groupon and it was only $35 which was awesome. Our guests really enjoyed seeing the photos and some got really creative which was cool. I agree though to put up a sign telling people it’s a “guest book” (or to sign your letters), ours thought the guestbook was so pretty they didn’t sign it even with the pens right next to it!!! We had to get our MC to make an announcement.

That’s true, we would probably need more letters for 400 guests, huh! Great suggestions, and thanks for the feedback.
Well good news is we already have wooden initials “A&N” 🙂 They’re 10″ high. Do you think three 10″ letters is enough for 400 guests? Hmm. Also, the “&” is plain white and the “A” and “N” are painted grey with some white flower/vine detail on parts of it – should I paint it full grey to have people sign it?
