Here I am again asking for advice 🙂 I’ve been meeting with a few photographers but I’m having commitment issues (hmm, just like the ring, and the dress lol). Anyway, I’ve also been concerned about the expense. I know some spend $5000 and up but I just can’t do it.
I gave myself a budget of $2500 but I haven’t found someone that I’ve felt completely comfortable paying that for one reason or another. I took the advice given to another bee and decided to search Craigslist. Now keep in mind, I’m a photography nut so I’m also a bit picky and don’t want a complete amateur. I told myself I wouldn’t skimp in this area yet I’d love to save some $ and still get good pics
I found this one that I think is pretty good and she’s $850 less for the same amount of time however it does not include a wedding album OR prints like the other’s packages.
Please tell me what you think. I’m having such a hard time comparing photographers and their packages!
Thank you in advance!

I am in the EXACT same situation as you. And it is hard. Needless to say I haven’t booked one yet.
I would say it is okay. Not bad but not excellent. How much are they?

@MissHighHeel: Oh lord now I’m concerned they’re not good! $1650 for 8hrs, $2000 for 10. Uggh!! The other two I looked at are $2500. One includes engagement session and 4×6 print of all. The other includes a 10×10 album and $100 print credit, no engagement.
I hope you find one soon, I’m about to pull my hair out! 🙂

The pictures don’t really tell a story as much as just random shots. maybe you should consider what style photographs you want and once you do you can make a list of things and events you want photographed throughout your day. Once you have those you make it part of your contract and they’ll have to stick to it.

WELL. Ok. I am picky… and used to seeing the $5000 ones. So when I see mid-range, I can’t help but think that it doesn’t compare to the other ones.
I think for that price it is good though!
I am debating between a $5,000 person and a $1,000 person.

I like the photos! I only looked at the first 10 or so, but they seemed great to me. Even my dream photographer has some photos that I don’t like… so I think this one is great! Not sure why she is only $850 though. Is it because of experience? Just ask lots of questions 🙂

Okay… I viewed the gallery. I personally am not a fan of very many of her shots… sowry
I totally feel you on not wanting a complete amateur BUT I can say that just b/c a photographer hasn’t done weddings doesn’t mean they won’t rock it.
Our photog needed wedding related shots for his portfolio and gave us an AMAZING deal… we got e*pics, wedding-all day + a 2nd shooter, a TTD session that we’re still planning on doing, and high res shots of all that he took… for 500 bucks.
Things was that made me comfortable with him is he does alot of toddler & children shots… in more of a photo journalistic approach and they were AMAZING…. I know that 2 & 3 year olds are incredibly hard to shoot and so I was pretty confident that he wouldn’t miss much on our day.
Here’s our recap if you want to see what I’m talking about…..
Have you thought about looking into students? Sometimes there are some amazing photog that just don’t have the shots in their portfolio and are will to give great deals. Try maybe calling your local college/university and talking to their arts dept director…. or maybe you could even post a flyer on campus…
just a thought… I know that finding the right photog is usually a big deal. I know that our pics were VERY important to me.
Goodluck in your search =)

I think the majority of the photos are beautiful!

The pictures are ok but not 100% my speed.
Have you tried contacting the local art schools? I was in your same shoes not wanting to spend too much money. We contacted 2 schools and got a bunch of responses– from current students to recent grads to professors.
We chose one of the professors who because she is doing this on the side is very reasonable and talented.
Also we chose not toood luck in your go with a package up front. We are paying her hourly fee and buying cd/dvd of the images and then if we choose to we can buy an album or prints from her after the wedding and seeing the images. This way it’s a little less expense out of pocket now.
Good luck in your search!

I think the photos are good and show potential. If there is something particular that you want from a photography, why not talk to the photographer about it (specific shots, color v. black/white, etc.)

I think some of her pictures are really great but i think its very off and on. I honestly think you could find someone better! My advice would be to find someone who is already an amazing photographer but is trying to branch out into wedding photography. Maybe like a family/child/seniors kinda photographer. Then you might be able to get a discount on really amazing workmanship. My sister is an amazing photographer but she does alot of kids, families, seniors, etc and is now trying to branch out into wedding. Her prices are gonna be lower than someone who is already established in the wedding community. But I can say for a fact that she takes amazing pics! Honestly I’m lucky cause shes best friends with an amazing wedding photographer who is going to do my wedding, ready? FOR FREE!!! Otherwise I would totally be in your predicament! I hope you find someone amazing!

Okay so I’m a bit surprised that the majority find these unappealing. I guess it’s the beauty of opion and taste. I’ve looked at sooo many lately and I know exactly the type I like and don’t like. I’m picky about lighting and contrast. I’m not a fan of dull or hazy pics. I like good quality pics along with composition and then the fun factor or story telling second I guess.
You all give great advice and it’s much appreciated. I have done seniors, kids, and even weddings so I get that there are people out there willing to branch out for less, etc.. It’s almost what I thought of this one, I thought she was good but doesn’t have the exposure that the others do so she does it cheaper.
Here are the other two I’m looking at. Anyone willing to offer their opinion on these? Again these are NOT the holy crap amazing $6,000 photographers but I feel they take good QUALITY images witha timeless feel. One is more traditional than the other I think

Honestly, for the money, Deborah is your best bet out of the bunch. Her portraiture is very good. The issue I see with her wedding images is lack of a signiture style….her processing is all over the place, Vintage, Sepia, Vibrant, etc. Ask her to see a wedding gallery from start to finish, not just random portfolio images. If they look good and you like her, go for it!

I like her pictures. I think they are very pretty.

i mean she’s playing The XX on her website…that alone says that she rocks.
