Why was it necessary to mention that the person who made the comment was ‘perpetually single and not happy about it’? She said your ring was cute and very pretty. That was a compliment. Accept it with a smile and move on. Not everyone will fawn over your ring, and that’s okay. The only one who needs to like it is you. I don’t understand why this is a big deal…?

I think these things always depend on the situation and people involved. If you don’t trust that the person has good intentions, your mind will automatically go to a negative place regardless of how much they gush over it. A lot of it has to do with tone and context. There are some people that could say the exact same words (“very pretty” and “cute” in this case) and it would come off completely different.

I personally don’t find “cute” as offensive, but it really depends on how someone is saying it. I catch myself saying things/animals/people/outfits are cute all the time, but I genuinely mean it as a positive compliment.
