If they want you for a second interview, generally they really mean it. They’ve decided to narrow down the pool and it means you’re a strong candidate. However, the first company might just be busy – maybe they don’t have the time they thought they had to devote to hiring. The last place I interviewed for, I didn’t have the second interview for 2 or 3 weeks and was told I’d be contacted if the job was filled. Then I didn’t get any notice for over a month til I got a rejection letter – by that time I’d already assumed they were never going to contact me.

They are not going to waste their own time holding a second interview with someone they are not interested in as a future employee. So, merely getting told they want you back is a good sign.

The fact that the first company hasn’t called you yet can mean any number of things. Likely none of them has anything to do with you. They could have scheduling problems (getting the people on their side available who need to be there), their HR person could still be interviewing others in the first round etc.

Have you sent them a card or an email  thanking them for the interview? If not, now is the time. It will refresh their memory.

Another thought, I’m not sure where you are but if you’re in the US, maybe they have a lot of people out on vacation because of the 4th (I know at my company, about half the people were gone this week and/or the end of last week). They might have wanted to wait until after the holiday to schedule something.

I am going through the same thing.  Interview went great, they introduced me to people as we toured the building, they even said since they knew I am currently working they would not mind scheduling the second interview after hours.  Then, nothing.

They are using a recruiter and I left a message with her yesterday.  Today, the job posting is gone.  I hope it is only because they got flooded with resumes and not because they offered it to someone else.

@future.mrs.c:  That’s great!!!

The recruiter did email me last night to say that the hiring managers have been tied up on another project.  So I am not out yet.  Smile
