My cousin is getting married at the end of December. In my area that means snow (probably tons of it) on the ground.
I don’t know what to wear to this wedding. I don’t think it’s black tie, but it is in a sort of fancy venue. Could any of you bees give me some tips on what’s appropriate?
I’m going to New York City this weekend, so I hope to find something there. I’m thinking I’ll probably go to Macy’s and Nordstrom Rack. Are there any other stores you would recommend? I’d like to keep it under $200.

This is a good time of year because all of the holiday collections are out. You could also get away with wearing a short, sparkly dress with opaque black tights.
Macy’s, Nordstrom Rack, Bloomingdales, Banana Republic, even Ann Taylor would be good.

Any cocktail dress with a faux fur shrug thing. Or a really nice blazer. Tights are always an option too.
ETA: if the wedding is in ON…I’d opt for a really nice pant suit, or a long dress (if the wedding is formal enough for one). The perks of long dresses and pant suits are that you can secretly wear leggings underneath for an extra layer. (Which I am SO doing for my wedding next year, haha)

@amandasf: Thanks, I’ll check all those places out!
@the_future_mrs: Yes, it is in Ontario. Hmm, I wonder if I can get away with a long dress…

Tights and cardigans are your friend! 🙂

@amandasf: +1 this. get a nice dress for new years and wear it with tights to the wedding. Sparkly!

People go out all year round in all sorts of weather. Wear whatever is appropriate for the degree of formality of the wedding. I presume the venue is heated.
Wear outerwear that will make it comfortable to get there dress coat, tall boots, gloves etc.

Well, there is no such thing as overdressed, however if you aren’t sure about the dress code, the time of the event should dictate appropriate attire. I actually prefer winter events, you can get away with so much more dramatic clothing choices and colors than what summer allows, plus the winter accessories trump summer for my any day! If it were me, I would look for something like this, in a buff and chocolate combo with some dreamy leather knee boots and a wooley, drapey wrap instead of a coat.

@Nona99: Wow! Thanks, but that’s way too advanced for a fashion novice like me!
I’m liking the idea of a sparkly dress with some tights. Seems simple enough that I should be able to manage it.

I like the sparkly dress/tights idea. Last year I worethr exact same thing – a sparkly black lacy cocktail dress and black tights to my company Christmas party.
