I walked into a bridal salon/wedding dress store today, just to have a look around and started having a conversation with the consultant. She asked me if I had chosen my colors, I told her I wasn’t too sure, but we are going for more of a rustic type vibe.
Then she asked me what rustic means! 🙂 I wasn’t sure if she was testing me or if she really wasn’t sure what I meant.
And I haven’t looked up the exact definition, but I just said more of a country/outdoorsy kind of thing!
I’m just curious what you Bees consider to be rustic! Thanks 🙂
..and feel free to add pictures!

RUSTIC – outside, country, woods, nature.
Country, barns, burlap, wildflowers, lots of DIY, mis matched chairs, mason jars, hanging fairy lights, a laid back, non pretentious feel that doesn’t feel too “weddingy.” Hope this helps 🙂

I would describe it as having a “country feel.” I think of nature, woods, simple, earth tones or neutrals, etc.

Whew! Good to know I was on the right page! I’m pretty sure I’m on the right track with my DIYs and the fact that our event is outdoors and in the country!
Outdoor ceremony hopefully with wooden benches.
Exposed wooden (reception) tables with burlap runners.. maybe lined with lace.
Mix matched jars with flowers. Either plain or wrapped in burlap or lace.
Light flowy dress (haven’t found it yet, but thats what I want :))
Clothesline photo display. Woven card basket.
Does that sound rustic? I think it sounds pretty rustic and laid back! Even that takes some work though!

@ohulani: I think you hit the nail on the head! You know what rustic means, I don’t know why your bridal consultant doesn’t know the meaning of that word… since it’s pretty important to her job! She has to find dresses based on the theme of the wedding…. rustic, romantic, casual, punk, gothic, she has to know the meaning of these words or she shouldn’t be a consultant if she doesnt’t know how to sell her products (ie: dresses) properly.

@ohulani: Well, after this weekend I can add pictures! My wedding is tomorrow and it is ‘rustic’ themed!
So for me that means that
- I am getting maried in a camp
- My centerpieces are using mason jars and wood pieces (like actual logs)
- We are having a bonfire at the end
- My favors are s’mores on a stick
- We are actually having real s’mores at the bonfire

Oh and all my flowers are wildflowers!

Wait, a bridal consultant didn’t know the meaning of one of the most sought after wedding themes…ever?
Well, to answer your question, rustic to me means:
country setting (like farms and barns and wooden fences and bails of hay)
burlap, gingham, and lace decor
soft, romantic colors tied in with masculine ones (blush pink with a blue maybe)
out door wedding
bug spray. *hee hee!*

Is this bridal salon located…on Mars??
Hopefully she was trying to figure out what rustic means to you. Like, to get more details about your vision. Cause if this is really a brand new concept to her, then I’m going to have to assume that she is, in fact, a Martian.

Well, it seems terms like “rustic” can mean something a little different to each person. She was probably trying to get a feel of what it exactly means to you. 🙂
Like, I’ve called our theme “modern-rustic”. I’m not even sure such a thing exists…lol. But for me it means we’re getting married in a hotel ballroom in the city, but I’m trying to incorporate an outdoor fall theme into it by including pumpkins, floating twigs in water with floating candle, lanterns, twine, lots of candles & lights on a string, and lots of DIY.
Your wedding sounds like it will be beautiful…and very rustic. 🙂

I agree, maybe she’s just trying to feel you out. It seems like “rustic” is a big buzz word lately, but not a lot of people are really having outdoor, country weddings.

When I hear rustic I think outside, possibly a barn, fields, wood related centerpieces, wildflowers, and picnic tables.

@nutMeg13: Yay! Have fun 🙂 We thought about doing smores b/c theres a fire place at the reception area. We’ll see! Can wait to see pics 🙂
@Eight6Eleven: Bug Spray! I haven’t thought of that. I might have to consider citronella or something for the mosquitoes :/
@Eglantine: Haaaha! You’re post made me laugh. No we’re not on Mars! But we are on an island so not many rustic/country weddings. I can imagine theres lots of beachy/tropical weddings. Off topic: Your username reminds me of eggplants. I like eating eggplant 🙂
Thanks ladies for all your definitions! Confirms that I know what I’m talking about.
Heres a pic of the drive to our venue…
