We have two…

Bought for us by FI’s father. It was about $1000 and, frankly, a piece of crap. The table top is faux stone and scratches/scuffs like crazy. The chair legs started falling off once we had to move it into a carpeted room vs tile at our old house. The table legs are now held on with new brackets because they are so junky. It’s from The Brick, but this table set is found at MANY furniture stores.

The second one is also from The Brick and was about $350. We bought it because it was the cheapest table set we could find at the time. Looking back, I’d buy quality used instead. The table top is scratched to all hell and the chair backs have worn down from sitting on it after less than 2 years.

What I’ve learned? Solid wood or natural stone only. Spend the money on quality and you won’t be replacing it in a few years. Also, a neighbour pointed out that white suede chairs are a BAD idea if you ever have kids!

Here is mine. It’s from Target, and is working great after 3 years. This picture is in our old apartment which is a lot smaller than the one we have now. the sides actually fold up so its a circle table. It came with the two chairs pictures but we bought two extra stools for when guests come over. We paid about $250 I want to say, and it’s all solid wood, which is a must especially for something that needs to be sturdy like a dining room table.

We have a dining table and a kitchen table. They’re both from IKEA but the dining table is bigger (seats up to 10 comfortably and 12 at a push) and the kitchen one seats 2 (although we’re upgrading to a 4-seater soon).

We have this table:

and these chairs:

They’re from IKEA. We have 6 chairs but our table has 2 leaves and can easily sit 10 people. It’s alright, I guess. I don’t love it but I don’t hate it.

@takemyhand:  If you want solid wood and save money, look on Craigslist. There are ads all the time from people who are retired and downsizing and practically giving away solid wood dining sets.

If you don’t like the look, a coat of paint can make a big difference.

I know I have photos somewhere of our set in our house, but I can’t find them at the moment! Anyhow, here’s ours from the store’s website. We have eight chairs as well as the china cabinet. This is in our formal dining room. We have a more casual set in our kitchen eating area.

I got mine when I lived in my apt 6 years ago.  It was $250 from Garden Ridge.  I still love it, but I’m ready for something new so I can have more than 2 people over for dinner.

Ours came from my mother’s best friend’s husband’s parents when they passed away. My mom’s best friend and her husband are practically my second parents and the husband wanted his parents’ set to go to someone who knew them and would take good care of it. The set is from the 1970s and we got it re-finished into a cherry wood. The only downside to this was that the chairs were orange upholstered nightmares so we didn’t take them so we still need to drop some $$$ in chairs. If you can find a nice vintage piece, or a piece that seems “ugly” but has classic touches, then if you paint it or get it re-finished/stained then you may have a piece that looks good as new for a lot less. Our set is formal and has a substantial look, which I love.

@Natalieh86:  totally off topic, but any idea what the color paint is on your dining room wall? That is the exact color I wanted our kitchen, but ours turned out more blue-ish grey, so we’ll be re-painting it after the wedding. Ugh.

As an example of what you can get free, this is from the Free section of Craigslist in our city today:

This would look great with either painting the chairs, or re-upholstering the seats or both.

@Robin_Sparkles:  Yes!  It is from Sherwin Williams and it is Exclusive Plum. On my screen it looks a little bit lighter than IRL. Not sure if this is any different . . .
