lessa :  At that age, my kids liked electronics. Video games, handhelds, phones, etc. They each had hobbies and/or crafts that they were interested in and appreciated stuff related to those too. My son liked books like Guiness Book of World Records, and other books of lists and interesting facts.

lessa :  Do you mean like for Christmas and Birthdays?  Or just because?  Or heirloom/lifelong type gifts?

From my own experience I can say that the most important things are your child’s hobbies, age and types of gifts which he got earlier. In last case as I understood you want to find something new comparing with the previous gifts.
Think again about his hobbies, what does he like to do? Does he like cars, gadgets, sport games, drawing, superheroes and so on? I’m sure that even among his old interests it’s possible to find a fresh idea.
A good variant can be toys or other things for learning, like keyboards if your son is interested in music https://pickadvisor.org/best-keyboard-for-kids , a tablet, stuff for painting, making wooden models or chemical experiments.
Also some children adore the toys which they can share with their friends. They can be for example puzzles, board games, balls for football and so on.
Check experience gifts too, they provide very many interesting ideas for children with different age.
