It would be easy for them to find repertoire if you hire a violonist.

Violin would be good – a harp would be awesome if you could get one, but if it’s not one of your choices, I’d go with violin.

I would definitely go with the violin or the viola. Violas actually sounds really nice with cellos, but the music for them is less common. I definitely wouldn’t go with a guitar, the styles kind of clash. The flute would be okay, but once again, there wouldn’t be as much music written for them.

Yes, a string duo or trio will have more options for repertoire without having to rearrange stuff.

Flutes can generally play violin parts with no trouble, and vice-versa, and it would be a very unique combo, if you end up going that route.

Guitar and cello would be an unusual pairing and they would probably need to arrange parts for whatever pieces you select (so you could incur additional costs going that route, because working out the arrangements will take them additional time).

One other thing you might think about: if you have the extra room in your budget and can find someone, a pianist/keyboard player is a good, solid, all-around accompaniment option to pair with any instrument. Depending on the venue you may need someone who can bring in a keyboard, but there are very good-quality, good-sounding keyboards out there now and that would leave you wide open in terms of pieces your cellist could do.

Aha, gotcha. That plus the fee for the pianist would probably overextend you, then … yeah, in that case, I’d say top choice should be violin, with flute as the backup option because a flutist could use the same musical score; if your budget allows for a string trio that would be super elegant and classy. Best of luck! Do you have specific music picked out yet?
