Can someone explain to met what exactly a bridal shower is and what goes into one? My Maid/Matron of Honor is throwing me a surprise one but is now sure what goes into one or how long it should be. Do you paly games? Do we give favors? Do I open gifts in front of everyone?

Bridal showers typically last about 3 hours. My bridal shower was very casual. It was at my MOHs mom’s house. When we got there there was a table with food on it and some appetizers (chips and dips) in the kitchen. We hung out, mingled, had some wine, then ate some food. After we were all done eating I opened gifts in front of everyone. There weren’t any games, just gift opening then more hanging out. My Maid/Matron of Honor got little sandwiches, salad, and a beautiful cake. She also got favors – little candles that said “Clare’s Bridal Shower, May 27,2010” and some hersheys kisses in this adorable little polka dot bag.
I also just went to a bridal shower on Saturday that was at a small event space. There were 4 tables for guests to sit at with a cake in the center of each table. When we first got there we mingled, had some champagne punch and then everyone was seated and we ate food. After we were done eating we played a couple of games. One was “how well do you know the bride” and another was “the purse game” where the host names an item and you have to find it in your purse. The person who had the most items in the purse won a prize. After we played these games we had the cakes. The woman who is making the cakes for the wedding made these centerpiece cakes that were 4 different flavors and we got to try all of them and vote on which one should be the flavor for the wedding cake! Then the bride opened gifts and we played “gift bingo” where you put a piece on the bingo board if she opens a gift that you have on your board. The favors for her shower were cupcakes from Georgetown Cupcake with the couples monogram on top. It was really lovely!

I think it can be whatever you and Maid/Matron of Honor want it to be!
Casual, formal, whatever!
Mine was a great little Sunday Brunch restaurant with immediate family & friends. My Maid/Matron of Honor rented a private room, there were no games because it’s not my style. She had a bunch of little DIY touches, my Mother-In-Law made chocolate lollipop favors in shape of Daisies (our wedding flowers). It was super sweet.
Here’s WeddingBee’s description of one:

They can definitely vary. Like Pitbullover said, they’re usually around 3 hours long. My shower was at a banquet room at a local restaurant. Everyone picked lunch from a limited shower menu. My Maid/Matron of Honor organized a few games for everyone to play (including purse bingo, and this left-right game with the centerpieces). By the time the games were over, lunch was served.
After lunch, they did a raffle with several gift baskets that my bridesmaids put together (for instance, a beach basket, italian basket, movie basket, etc). Guests put tickets into a jar for the baskets they wanted, and names were drawn. Just a fun way to involve everyone!
I opened gifts in front of everyone, cake was served and that was about it! My bridesmaids made favors out of melting chocolate – little chocolate shoes and rings (my shower was themed after my wedding shoes).
