i am pregnant with my second, but I am on a totally different appointment schedule this time then I was with my daughter. With my daughter I had an appointment at 6w where they just talked to me and then we heard the heartbeat at the 10 week appointment. This time I went in at 4 weeks dur to yeast and BV issues so now I will go in at 8 weeks and then 12 weeks.
They at told me the 8 week appointment will be long, but didn’t tell me what it will entail. my husband has very limited time off, so if they are just going to talk at me, I would rather him wait until our 12 week appointment to hear the heartbeat.
So my questions are, what happens at an eight week appointment? I know my OB isn’t big on ultrasounds other than the anatomy scan and they didn’t tell me to drink a ton of water or anything. Can you hear the heartbeat on a Doppler that early? Should Darling Husband skip this one?

I would call your doctor and ask. It seems every doctor does something a bit different.
I don’t think you can hear the heartbeat at 8 weeks on a Doppler. You can see it on an ultrasound

MrsMath: my first appt was 8 weeks. We got info, dating ultrasound, and full exam with pap by the ob. Also did blood work. It was probably almost 2 hours total,

Lots of blood work, health history and ultrasound to confirm.

Every office is different, mine would not do an ultrasound at that time contrary to other posters. It would be health history, going over the dos and don’ts of pregnancy, answering any questions, complete blood workup and urine test. No heartbeat check or ultrasound assuming no prior pregnancy issues (history of miscarriage, etc.).

MrsMath: Before our ‘actual’ appt began, we sat with a NP and answered questions for about an hour – wasn’t expecting it as this is our first pregnancy, so that was fun haha. We got a script to get all the initial bloodwork done (it was a lot of vials), a script to have our NT scan in case we decided to do that, which we’re having done on Friday, and a vaginal/pelvic exam. She said it was usually still too early to try to hear for the HB so we didn’t do that until our 12week appt. I think, had I not had an early U/S at 7 weeks due to spotting, we would have gotten a script for an U/S as well. Like PP’s said, I think most offices handle it differently.
