My story may not seem unique, but to me, it’s beautiful. Here it goes 🙂
25 years ago, an awkward, nerdy looking girl walks into her first day of 6th grade. New school, new town, enitirely new life. Yes, this girl was me. I made a few friends, but had only 2 “real friends” that were my best friends. One was a girl, and of course the other a boy. This boy and I grew to be great friends. We told each other our crushes, spent recess hanging out and talking, even encouraged each other during gym class lol. I grew to like this boy, in more than a friend way, but never told him, because he was one of the “popular” kids, and I wasn’t.
Then we went on to junior high and high school, saw each other around once in a while, but never really talked like we did that first year. I was the awkward teenager, he was the popular sports guy, why would I?
Our lives continued on our own paths. He moved away, got married, had kids, got divorced. I stayed in our home town, got married, had kids, got divorced.
Then one day, 6 months ago, I see him, in Wal-Mart, of all places. He’s back! And all these years later, I still remember that boy hood grin that I had grown to adore. No longer the awkward 12 yr old I was once, and no longer shy, I message him on facebook, just to say hi to an old friend. We talk for a few weeks, messaging back and forth, before we decide to meet up in person, on my birthday, June 19th. We talked for hours, like the years hadn’t gone by, as if it were 25 yrs ago. And of course, we tell each other that night how we’ve always harbored secret feelings for each other. I was too insecure, he was too shy, and neither of us said anything to each other. Ironically enough, I have now heard from high school friends how he always had a “crush” on me and has always asked about me over the years since high school.
It’s been the best 6 months of my life. I feel like I have my best friend back, we never argue, always laugh, finish each others sentences, and are just perfectly in sync.
For the past several weeks, he’s been hinting at marriage. Comments like “how do you feel about your last name?” and “if we were to get married…” I’ve caught him playing with my ring finger, he’s asked what rings I like, and the biggest hint was him saying “I can’t wait for Christmas. It’s going to be the best ever and I’m giving you the best gift you’ve ever gotten!” I think a proposal is in my near future, and I couldn’t be more excited!! Even if he doesn’t, I couldn’t be happier!
25 years was a long time to wait, but the wait was definitely worth it 🙂
