I am surprised that never in three years did it ever come up that he thought engagement rings were unnecessary, but regardless, he offered to buy her one because it was important to her. So, problem solved. Men should not be expected to read their SO’s mind, and now that she has expressed what she wants, he is willing to do that for her. In my mind, that’s a man who cares about her and her feelings. If she wants to reject that and then forever be mad that he didn’t live up to her (unspoken) expectation that he surprise her with a ring, then she’s setting the relationship up for failure.
