Add me to the “others.” I think that having a baby is more an immediately life-changing event; you only get nine months to prepare, and then your life/views/future/etc… are immediately different the moment the baby makes it’s appearance in the world. However, I think the years (for many couples) it takes to nuture a relationship to the marriage stage is also life-altering; it just takes a little longer.
Also, while I understand the argument that marriage is “less permanent” than having a baby, I disagree with it. Sure, people get divorced every day, but people also have abortions every day and give their children up for adoption every day. And I think that for a lot of couples, divorce is not as easy or optional as we tend to think. Just my two cents. 🙂
