I am making the cupcakes/cake for a friends wedding. They have requested German Chocolate Cake.
I know about the forsting, but what is the actual cake like? I’ve been looking at recipes and it seems like German Chocolate Cake uses real chocolate, not cocoa. Many of the recipes use sweetened chocolate too, but some do not. Is the cake supposed to be sweeter than a normal chocolate cake? It seems like the frosting is going to be sickeningly sweet already. Most recipes also call for buttermilk.
I’ve never gad German Chocolate Cake unfortunately! I want to make sure its reallllly friggin good!

It’s a light chocolate. It tastes like chocolate cake, just not as rich as a regular chocolate.

Thank you!! I found a couple recipes calling for dark chocolate, would you saw those are not “right”? Maybe semi-sweet chocolate would be best!

Heaven, LOL! Seriously, I Loveeeee chocolate cake. I think a semi sweet would be the best. Too much chocolate in a german chocolate will take away from the coconut and you want them to mesh together perfectly. Not have one overpower the other.

There is a specific type of German baking chocolate you can use -I think Baker’s brannd makes it. It’s more of a mild chocolate flavor.

I actually JUST learned that German chocolate cake is not a German food, but rather named after its inventor, Sam German. German chocolate is a specific type of chocolate, but generally I think you could use any type. WHen I make German chocolate cake, I just use my favorite chocolate cake recipe…which uses cocoa, because really, I don’t want to stop at the store for something I don’t really use any other time.
The frosting is the most important part. I like this recipe for mine.
