The definition would depend on your caterer or venue.  I spoke with a few and had all sorts of explanations and ideas.  Sometimes, there are “stations” involved serving different foods, sometimes lots of butler passed foods.  I think the concept is great, and gives the guests the ability to try different things and mingle.

If I were a guest and I read this I would think a full meal/ sit down meal is not being served and I should have a meal before I go. 🙂

I would also expect that the reception would be a tad shorter than average.

Would it not cost just as much to serve a meal?  At least when I look at the price of appetizers on catering menus I always think it cost as much as some meal options. Look and compare….then decide. Good luck!

@Ronneykay:  What a nice idea!

As far as what food is considered, it was really all over the board when we were looking.. I mean anywhere from the usual passed canapes to fruit and veg trays, sushi rolls, chocolate fountains, carving and pasta stations, even mashed potato “bars”, etc.  We ended up not going that route because with the choices I would have wanted, it got very expensive, very fast.  PM me if you want me to send some of the sample menus that our caterers sent to us during the process.  I have a few files that were sent to me that list TONS of hors d’oerve options!

i went to a wedding and the cocktail hour had heavy apps,  they had lamb chops, pasta, fruit and cheese, crackers, pastries… seriously there was so much food that I thought that was all the food for the reception and I ate alot!! but then they said we should all go into the ballroom for the “Real” dinner and I was thinking wait more food?
