Something under .50 could be considered large

    .50 to 1 carat

    1 to 1.5 carats

    1.5 to 2

    over 2

@CaptainSpaulding:  i would agree with this to a point…i certainly haven’t asked anyone and no, i don’t sit around with my friends discussing it either, but you learn a little bit about the relative size of rings when you get engaged and are shopping around a bit, and you can NOTICE the relative sizes of the rocks around you, lol.

Around here (midwest), in my circle of friends and family, flashy cluster type rings are popular.  Lots of very small diamonds clustered together in different arrangements on a huge ring. I’d say .5-1.5 tcw.  The key is tcw. Having one large stone doesn’t seem to be the thing to have around here.

I’m near Philly, so 1ct and up is about the norm and sometimes I see ones that might be bigger than that.

However, when I go home, which is a different part of PA, my ring is much bigger than the other girls my age. If I lived at home, my ring probably would have been smaller. I rarely see a 1ct ring at home.

After this post, I just looked at my hand and my diamond shrank, HAHA. It doesn’t really matter to me…somedays I look at it and I think that it is big and others it looks average.

I live in the Oklahoma City area and have a lot of friends that have gotten engaged recently and all of our rings are in the 1-1.5 carat range. I would say 2 carats or more would be considered “large” here.

Here most people would think that 1 ct is large.

nobody in my family or friend group has a large diamond. my .5 carat is bigger than everyone else’s diamond (if they have one at all). most of my girlfriends don’t have an engagement ring,  or had a small engagement ring and opted out of the wedding band.

@cardus: Aw, gotcha. Those weren’t my exact words, they just apply to me perfectly. I actually never shopped for my ring, nor did I notice other people’s erings that much before getting engaged. I agree there’s nothing wrong with asking for research/purchase- I certainly would!!

I would say that a carat is probably considered a little bigger than the norm around these parts. Although most of my friends’ rings are below a carat. I’ve never actually seen anyone wearing anything larger than that in real life (although I’d like to Laughing).

My ring is 1.5 which seems about average. I would think 2ct+ would be large.

Fiance is from a small town in the rust belt and the girls there day dream about .75 ct rings. I’m self conscious about my ring when I’m visiting there.

Average is 1 here, large is 1.5 and up. Huge rings….(and they all look the same….)

Edit: and I am the only one without one nearly that big… :/

Anything about or around .50 cts is big in my area in general… anything over .25 cts is big in my circle of friends though. My ring is 1 ct and my friends always want to look at it lol.

I think 1 ct would be on the large side and 1.5-2 ct would definitely be large in my area. I do work in a “well off” area of St. Louis and I see several women that have 2 plus ct rings!

In my circle 2cts is large. I think .75 to 1ct is the norm within my group.
