You will probably know what I’m talking about when I say that they run envelopes through a machine that prints a bunch of wavy lines through the stamp in the upper right corner. Hand canceling means that someone uses a prettier, less obtrusive stamp and literally stamps over your postage stamp with it.

at some/most locations there is an additional charge to do this – they recommend it if theres something inside the envelope/invite thats bumpy, rough etc.

Regular mail is run through a machine that puts a stamp over the postage.  This is called canceling.  Hand canceling is having the envelopes stamped by hand. You do this if the envelopes or invites might be damaged by the machine.

You may want to check with your post office to see if they still offer this. After the anthrax scare, many post offices decided to cancel this service.

Wow I feel stupid, I always thought it meant going and canceling having them sent.  like they’d have to go through and pull them and not send them.  LOL not sure why I thought that

Definitely check if your post office allows this. My post office was actually one at the center of the anthrax scare and they said they only sporadically allow hand-canceling.  When they do allow it, you have to go first thing in the morning, and you have to do all the stamping yourself. I ended up doing just that, but as PP mentioned they have the right to refuse.

We got ours hand cancelled.I think it really added to the final invitation. I also like how the stamps and calligriphy didn’t get ruined by running throught the machine.
