I think the percentage that you should expect is somewhere in the high 60’s.  (Unless you are having a wedding in Tahoe– then the percentage seems to rocket up to the 80’s and 90’s).  All my vendors warned me of the Tahoe phenomenon and I brushed them off… but they were right!

Latte, thanks for the link.  Using the weighted average is a great method!

You never know. I am currious about my wedding, too. My brother invited 250 people to his wedding. We are from CT and the bride is from WV… so it was in WV. He expected roughly 200 people to come and booked a reception venue (a cute Victorian inn) that had a MAX of 200. When all was said and done, the people he thought wouldn’t travel, DID! They had 230 people and had to change the venue the week of the wedding. We spent Wednesday-Saturday AM decorating/hiding animal heads in the Elk’s Lodge banquet hall.

For my wedding most people had to travel, and we had about a 60% acceptance rate. But for choosing venues, I would suggest you assume that 90% of your guests will come, even if you know that’s likely impossible. That way, you’re not stressed out the month before the wedding hoping people decline!

We had the same concern.  We went to school on the east cost and most of our friends and his family are spread between Boston/NYC/DC.  My whole family is in St. Louis, so that is where the wedding is.  So our guest list is split on in town and Out of Town.  But we are one of the first of our friends to get married and have been dating for a long time so they are all really excited about the wedding, so we have no idea what to expect.  Fiance is a consultant though, so he made me a beautiful model (fancy spreadsheet).  It is amazing.  It took our guest list of 140 and predicted 105 would come, we still hope for 100 though.

Anyways, I recommend the weighted analysis.
