Avg is about 250k -300k for a 3,500 sq ft house that is nice. There’s several in the 350-400k range that would skew on the VERY nice, with lots of upgrades, huge yards with pools, land, barns, etc.

Gotta love living in Alabama!

JiminyCricket : missinthecity : Yep. I’m in the city and houses that big are few and far between, most houses are tiny and at least $1.5mil in a place with a decent school. Something that big… many millions. Finding a three bedroom (which here is more like 1,500-2,000sq ft) for less than a million even in an “up and coming” neighborhood would be an absolute steal.

About $600k brand new.  I’m in the suburbs of Sacramento.  We are looking at moving out of our tiny starter home and into a larger home.  We are looking at a brand new house, about 2600 sq feet, with all the builder upgrades, and it will be about $500k

A 300 square foot studio a few blocks from me sold for $400,000 recently.

According to Zillow, a home of that size in my zip code would be around $5M-$15M.

In Chicago, with that approximate square footage, the cheapest I could find is over half a million for a crummy-looking forclosure in a not-very-desirable part of town.

Then I found one for 4.75 million right on the lakefront.  It’s very nice 🙂

berrybelle :  The Home Alone house is in Winnetka, which is a VERY tony suburb of Chicago.  Trust me, only very rich people live in Winnetka!!!

missinthecity :  Haha, we rent in NW and have looked at buying, but I can’t bear to spend a giant down payment for something that isn’t much bigger than the nice place we’ve got now. I feel like we will have to move eventually because we want one or two kids, but I love the city! If only ANY part of it was more affordable…

My Future Mother-In-Law built her 3800 sq ft house for 190k in 2004(?). It sits on 10 acres which was another 100k. The city values it at over about a million. She did good! Until she pays her taxes :/

She went house hunting with us in Orlando and was very horrified by the prices. But a 4100 sq ft house down the street sold for 597k  last year which was actually a good deal. My neighbor is currently attempting to sell his 2100 sq ft ALL original to the 60’s two-story for 425k which I don’t believe he will get.

Im in toronto, canada… and for that size, you’re definitely waaaay into the millions! Our house is not even 2000 sq ft and id list it for around 580-600… and its old and needs a lot of work. The real estate market is insane right now.

We live in the wealthiest county in GA and have the one of the best school systems. In the southern part of the county, you’d be looking at at least 500k, northern part of the county it’s be mid 300s. In our hometown, which is a suburb south of ATL, it’d be in the 300-400s. Our 2500sq ft house was around $240, but we’re in the northern part of the county!

sscott06 :  gosh that must be nice! The low end of a house like that near us would be about 4 million. And youd pay about 50k a year in property tax (on the low end).
