NY is a big state, so no real idea of the statewide average. You can get big houses for low prices upstate, but by me in Manhattan, houses (or apartments) that big are incredibly rare. I’d say $10+ million, and the house might even need some work.

clementsbee :  have you started looking yet? When I lived in LA 3 years ago, most 2/2 condos were going for over 550k and the prices have continued to rise since then!

WestCoastV :  We actually have started.  Not in person, just browsing online.  We are looking in the Valley mostly because my hubs territory for his new position at his company is the Valley from Oxnard to Pasadena.  I am an accountant/financial statement auditor and should have my CPA by the move in March so hopefully I’ll be able to find a good paying job.  We’re focusing in Sherman Oaks and Studio City but are really open to anything around.  Most of the places I see are $450k – $600k for a 2/2 condo or a 2/2.5 townhome.  Super sticker shock from my 2,600 sq ft house that we bought last year for $350k but his company has amazing relocation assistance so our mortgage will end up being the same 🙂

Did you like LA?  I’m a bit nervous since the culture is just so different but I have a feeling I’ll really like it 🙂

Just checked the listings for my town.

There’s a 3432 sq. ft. home with 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, built in 1908, 2 car garage, large fenced in yard for $335,000

For Kansas City, Missouri you could get 360k sf in foreclosure (and likely a not-so-great neighborhood) for $250k. In the more suburban areas, or newer/nicer home, etc. it’d be more like $450-750k.

This would be typical of a KC proper house of that size: http://www.zillow.com/homes/for_sale/2341598_zpid/3400-3600_size/globalrelevanceex_sort/39.43195,-94.093094,38.75087,-95.057145_rect/9_zm/

And for a suburban house of that size: http://www.zillow.com/homes/for_sale/75639544_zpid/3400-3600_size/globalrelevanceex_sort/39.43195,-94.093094,38.75087,-95.057145_rect/9_zm/4_p/

Hmmm. I don’t know anyone with a house that big where I live (Seattle). Doing a search based on 3400 sq ft +, you’re looking at over 1million, and even then I don’t know that they would meet the definition of “nice”. I just don’t think anyone here has a house that big, certainly no one I know!

I’m in New Orleans. Depending on what part of the city will play a HUGE factor in price. We have pockets of crazy real estate surge. For example, I know a part of town that it would be around $350k, but another that would be $3 million. The value goes up with historic areas.

I live in rural NJ, and a house like that would only cost you about 300 grand here. But travel twenty miles east of me, toward NYC, and that price would easily quadruple.

Same as you! I live off of NASA. Lol

Living in the south is so great as far as real estate prices are concerned.
