Aruba – it is the most developed Carribean island and you don’t have to worry about getting those tropical illnesses there unlike the other islands. Having said that I’m biased because it’s the only place in the Carribean I’ve been to! We are having our honeymoon there too.

Jamaica is generally a place where tourists are advised not to leave the hotel compounds without escort. The shopping areas have gates and guards. If you want to wonder around freely, I’d try somewhere like Barbados or the Virgin Islands.

We went to Puerto Rico – Boqueron. It was amazing…Playa Sucia and the lighthouse are literally the most beautiful places I’ve ever been.

We just booked our honeymoon through Sandals for St. Lucia.  I have had 4 friends go there for their honeymoon and have RAVED!  They recommended the St. Lucia Grande.  We got ours for 55% off so watch for deals!

@Happilyevaafter5:  What’s your budget (ball park figure)?

I’ve been doing a *lot* of research on the caribbean the last week or so, because we’re planning a combo belated honeymoon/babymoon and I want to just lie on a beach relaxing somewhere.  This is what I’ve been finding.

You should decide if you want all-inclusive or if you don’t.  I’ve always had a thing against all-inclusives in the past because I like to get off the resort and see what the real people are eating.  But now that I’m pregnant, the idea of staying put in one place and eating “safe” food is way more appealing.

Originally, I wanted to go to St. Lucia, but then I kept reading over and over in Trip Advisor that St. Lucia is a beautiful island, but it doesn’t have the white sands/turquoise water beaches that other islands do.  They have more brown sand and rougher waters, but usually the resorts have great pools.  So it depends on what type of experience you want.

I wanted  a great beach, so then I switched gears and started researching others.

I’ve heard great things (on trip advisor) about Aruba, Grand Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Anguilla, Turks and Caicos, and Barbados.  I’ve looked at resorts on each island, and since I’m super picky about resort reviews, but we also don’t want to spend $10,000 on a 5-night vacation we finally decided on Dominican Republic–just because I found a really nice All-inclusive with great reviews for only $3500, whereas all the other islands’ resorts with reviews that high were more in the $5,000+ range for 5 days.   So in the end, I went with one of my last choices for location (DR) to get a nicer resort for a cheaper price, rather than a more interesting location but a not-as-nice resort.

You just have to figure out what’s important to you.  Good luck!

Cozumel and Grand Caymen Islands are both beautiful. I particulary enjoyed Grand Caymen.

I can’t sing enough praise for the US Virgin Islands. I absolutely LOVED St. John! Its soooo beautiful! Its a small island that isn’t commercialized. My Fiance and I went last year and rented a villa with a private pool. We were a 5 minute walk from Cruz Bay and the ferry dock and 2 min from a secluded beach. There are amazing hiking trails that take you to private beaches and great views. There are a bunch of small bars and restaurants and plenty of shopping.

Its just a short ferry ride from St. Thomas, and most of the BVIs are very easy to get to.

@RockStar33:  I agree Cuba is a great destination. I love it there, and we just booked a march vacation there.  You do have to do your research there–there are a lot of older resorts with worn down ammenities. One of my coworkers is heading there the end of this month, and reading the trip advisor reviews for the resort, I would have rather saved that money and waited a couple of months and gone somewhere else if I was her.

That said, the resort we go to is awesome. This will be our third trip to this resort in 2 years, and I can’t wait to get back there. Affordable, beautiful consistent weather, incredible people.

We vacation in Cuba once or twice a year, so that won’t be our honeymoon destination, but if someone hasn’t been, it’s a great option!

I wouldn’t go to Jamaica on vacation having just got back from a mission trip there. It’s gorgeous but the non resort areas are just kind of shady. I love to hear others suggestions on other good places, we live in Texas so the Caribbean isn’t a long place ride away.

St, Thomas is goooooorgeous. Most beautiful water I’ve ever seen IMO, and I’ve travelled quite a bit. I haven’t been to St. Lucia myself, but my mom said she liked St. Thomas a lot more.
