Some lady that owned this jewelry store we went into had a huge one, asked her how big it was and she said 9 cts.
I’ve seen plenty of others in the 2 carat range though I wouldn’t say they are that common. I don’t have that many married friends, but most of those are .05-1 carat range. But I see plenty of 2 carat size rings around town since I live near a very wealthy area.

@Rachel631: I’m from the UK too, and the biggest I’ve seen is a carat that the head teacher at my work wears. It’s beautiful

I live in NYC, so everyday I see women with 2 – 3 cts on the subway. The biggest would probably be my former boss who wore a HUGE princess cut solitare, easily 8 – 10 ct. It was obnoxious.
As far as halos go, I feel like every time I see someone get engaged on Facebook they post a picture of their halo ring. I think some are nice, but I think in general many of them are not done well and look like they are tryng to make the diamond look bigger, instead of providing a visually interesting setting.

My mom has a huge 5 carat round, but she rarely wears it. It’s not an engagement ring though. My mom is the only person I regularly associate with that is really into jewelry, most of my friends and I still shop at Claires lol.

Biggest I’ve seen is a 4.5ct ring my great-grandfather gave my great-grandma. It’s always in a safe because everyone is scared to take it out!

I know several established couples who have upgraded to 2+ carats (my ex-boyfriend’s mom’s marquis comes to mind, especially).
The biggest I know personally is my great aunt’s pear shaped solitaire. It has to be 4ct+. Mom says it’s the size of an actual pear. 🙂
Average around here is hard to say – I interact with people from a lot of walks of life. My friends who got engaged/married in college were doing good to get 1/2 carat. I see a lot of ladies with around 1ct. My solitaire is around 1ct and I’ve been told it’s big – I think it’s perfect, but not huge. We also got married much older. My cousin just got engaged with my aunt’s original diamond, which couldn’t be 1/4ct. The ring she wears now is 1+. But my mom got engaged around the same time with a perfect 0.77.

There a couple ladies I work with who have large solitaires.. I would say at least 2 carats.
Mine is 1.33 in a halo and seems pretty big to me.
I have no idea what the average is for my area. There’s quite a bit of money in my province, so people can definitely afford large diamonds. I don’t see a ton of them in everyday life, though.

– 2? In my circle, we don’t ask how big something is like an e-ring.
– I know no one IRL with a halo. I know that wasn’t your question…I’m just saying.
– I have 1.25 center and I’m told my ring is very pretty and it gets lots of wows and oohs and I’m always surprised b/c to me…1 is average. I’m proud to be “average” but I live in the South…no idea if that has anything to do with it. I don’t think it does! Really, I wanted a 2 but we couldn’t find a diamond we loved that justified the price. When we saw this one (went smaller but up in quality) we both just thought it was beautiful. 🙂

I went to grad school with a girl who had a gorgeous asscher that was probably 3ct. Her husband is in private wealth management (and she was too before deciding to switch careers and go to grad school).
I would say 1ct is probably about average for Boston, at least from what I see. Obviously it depends on your circle!

Hmm. it was at least 15 carats. I was only a teenager and working for a very wealthy couple in Vail Colorado as a babysitter. For 3 days a friend of theirs from Texas came to visit – she owned the ring and was married to a legitimate Texas oil fortune, hence the ginormous ring. Not to mention the ungodly sized rings on other fingers.
I remember the woman I worked for discussing the woman’s jewelry while she was out of the room, that’s how I remember the carat size. She was quite dumbstruck by the size and also went on about the solid gold rolex she had given her as a gift.
Honestly, I wasn’t impressed. It didn’t look pretty it just looked HUGE and I assumed the lady was desparate to prove how fricking rich she was to all who laid eyes on her. (Not just because of the e-ring, but other jewelry too.) Which was kind of funny since much of it was so big I’m sure outside of wealthy enclaves most pple would assume it was fake. But the lady did live in Dallas, Texas – and from what I’ve seen they do live by the motto “bigger is better.”
The lady was also older, probably 50-60’s. I think as women age their jewelry gets bigger and bigger. I have heard more than a few times that big diamonds/ jewelry should only be worn by mature ladies, so I guess she took that to heart.

A girl I used to work with has a set that was original 2cts and then she made her husband swap out several of the diamonds in the wedding band for much larger ones, so I have no idea what it ended up at. (Yes, she did say that she made him do it.) The ring is okay. Not really my taste, although it’s not ugly by any means.
Other than hers…probably a couple of friends of ours? One has a quad set (but they’re right-angle triangles that form a rectangle) and one has a three-stone, both decently sized. We don’t really know many people with diamonds, I guess. Mine is definitely the biggest in my family at a whopping .5ct total.

my friends mom has a 5ct round center stone. It’s pretty crazy.

About a carat. 3/4ct to 1ct is about normal here.

A few girls in my sorority have huge rings. I’m not sure how many carats each one is, or if they’re diamonds or moissanite or something else. One girl has a decently large princess cut with a double halo. It takes up pretty much her whole finger! Again, not sure the size of the stone but it’s hugeee. The other girls have pretty big rings too, a few round cuts with cushion halo and one giant looking cushion in a halo. Gives me some serious ring envy and I’m not even engaged yet!

I used to work at a high end cosmetics counter in a known department store, and I cannot even fathom how large those rings must have been. I’d say the largest I saw there was around 4-5 cts.
Also used to work at a spa, and we had a regular who had a 3 carat pear. Beautiful.
The one I see most regularly is a friend’s, about 2 carats. Her husband is in finance, and her ring is this beautiful antique platinum setting just filled with diamonds. I might be a little obsessed with her ring.
