@OneOfTheseDaysAlice: Seriously, I can just imagine this conversation…

  • “Mommy, how was I conceived?”
  • “Well, honey, we bought condoms at the dollar store…”

We buy tons of generic, if it isn’t on the list we do generic. But the name brands I have to have are:

Heinz Ketchup

Hellman’s Mayo (Mrs. Philbert’s will do in a pinch)

Miracle Whip (DH prefers dressing)

Kraft Mac n Cheese (Aldi’s brand is not bad)

Velveeta Shells n Cheese

A1 Steak Sauce

Marie’s Blue Cheese dressing

Utz Potato Chips

Coke/Pepsi (Generic Cola is typically nasty)

I’m a sucker, and buy brand name on all kinds of things.  Cereal specifically – store brand rice crispies are not, and I repeat not, Kellogs Rice Krispies.  My Fiance thinks it’s hilarious, but I swear there is a difference.

And I only drink realy Coca-Cola.  None of this store brand shit cola nonsense.

I will do generic anything but Fiance is much pickier. He can’t have generic coffee without gagging, poor thing.

If I am going for a product that I have had before, I will usually grab whatever brand I am used to. If I am trying something, I always start by going for whatever is cheapest, which is usually the store brand.

Things I won’t buy generic are:

-Coke and Dr. Pepper (though I don’t really drink soda anymore)

-Velveeta shells and cheese

-Cookies or snack products, in general

-Smartfood popcorn

-Microwave popcorn (I haven’t had a generic one that I like, and I have tried them)

-Ice cream (if I’m going to eat that many calories, it’s got to be GOOD)

-Chicken noodle soup -has to be Campbell’s

-Chef Boyardee

I will buy most pantry staples generic, though. Plus, we have a chain called Wegman’s here and I have had very good experience with their store brand products. Except for their jarred alfredo sauce. Yuck.

Any kind of soda. I love Coke and Diet Dr. Pepper and the store brands always taste weird.

For American products not really many except Hunt’s ketchup and Kraft Zesty Italian dressing for my mom.

For Asian products everything is name brand, there is no such thing as a generic for us. A lot of Lee Kum Kee products in our household and plenty of other brands since some may be the same item but taste slighty different in different food applications.

We don’t eat much processed or prepared foods but we buy generic of everything we do buy (condiments, crackers, pasta, whatever). The only things I’m picky about are having proper bread (so it has to come from the bakery area, *not* the bread aisle), real cheddar cheese (I like most artisan cheddars here in Quebec, it just can’t be the store brand ‘sharp cheddar’ from Loblaws/Metro unless I’m buying it for my daughter), and if we’re buying cream cheese, it has to be Liberté brand which I think is only sold in QC. Other cream cheese can’t cut it on fresh bagels.
