I find functional fitness to be much more effective than any cardio machine (IE http://gubernatrix.co.uk/2009/05/what-is-functional-fitness/

But on my “off” days I like to walk on an incline on the treadmill and read a book.  Its a good recovery workout without being too easy and still working the muscles.

As for other machines I like cable weight machines. They use more muscles than the circuit machines that isolate muscles. Again, they are more effective and get more bang for your buck.

Treadmill! I feel like running is by far the best workout I get, even though it does get brutally boring sometimes to basically run in place.

I use the cross-trainer a lot more than the elliptical and really more than I should.  But I like that I can switch direction, incline, resistance.  It keeps me from getting bored more than the treadmill does.  So it is a love/hate relationship because I always feel like I should get off of it and run some intervals.

It doesn’t work all that many muscles, but I do love the lateral pulldown machine because it’s one of the ones working big muscles so I can see some gaudy amount of weight that I am using.

They’re not machines, but I also love the foam roller and the agility ladder.  Oh, and my gym got this whole setup where I can push-ups while suspended in mid-air.  Which is so much cooler than just doing them on the floor.

I enjoy the treadmill the most.  I use weight balls for my arms, stomach, sides, etc.

My favorite is the eliptical.  I bought a “Tony Little Gazelle” (from craigs list only $15 new). I live in an apartment so it is perfect for me. It folds up and stores easily in my closet. It’s great.

My fave is the elliptical. I have one at home but it is not even in the same class as the ones at the gym. Can’t beat it for a total body workout that isn’t stressful to my knees.

@JustlikeHeaven:  I may not have the exact names right, but I think of the elliptical as the one with arms where your feet move in an elliptical shape through the air.  The cross trainer is with the foot pieces are on an inclined track, so you can change the incline as well as the resistance level.  Sometimes there are arms but sometimes there aren’t.  Both of them have reduced impact compared to running, and both allow for foward and backward movements.

@JustlikeHeaven:  No problem.  I like the cross-trainer (or whatever I am calling a cross trainer) better because I think I push myself harder on it, and also the shape of the elliptical machines movement is sometimes uncomfortable on my feet and ankles.

The treadmill. I used to use the elliptical only and I thought I was getting a great workout… until I tried the treadmill and could not run for more than 10 minutes without stopping to catch my breath. Yikes! I switched to the treadmill and my cardio and endurance has improved immensely. It does get boring, but I put lots of pumped up music on my MP3 player and that helps the time pass.

I also like to do some free weights after a run, because running does not build much strength.

For machines – I really like rowing machines!

But I also like to use free weights – I prefer those to weight machines.
