I mostly gave it up a few years ago when I saw a psychologist for anxiety, and she questioned what social media bought to my life. I was hanging onto it because I’d lived overseas, and thought it helped me stay in touch with everyone.

I trialled deactivating FB (I never used Instagram much) and noticed a massive decrease in my anxiety!

I recently reactivated because I’m doing a course through my work, and there is a Facebook support group. Since reactivating, I’ve noticed some mindless scrolling.

when I’ve been social medi free people can never quite believe it . DH doesn’t use it either, he thinks it’s a waste of time

The only social media I use is Instagram. I have a Facebook account but I never used it and haven’t logged in in several years. I like Instagram because it’s a quick and easy way to see what my friends and loved ones are up to. I moved states to pursue my PhD, so I am separated geographically from most of my people. Checking in on Instagram throughout the week and seeing what they’re doing helps me feel connected to the people I care about, and posting pictures of my own experiences helps them stay connected to me too.

I’m not a big user of social media, but I honestly don’t have a problem with it. Some people like to talk about how social media ruins our society, ruins our attentions spans, ruins this or that… but really, I think social media can be a great tool to bring people together, as long as it’s used sensibly. My biggest issue with social media has nothing to do with the people who use it, and everything to do with the companies that run these services irresponsibly, selling people’s data, tracking people, doing nothing about the spread of misinformation and then claiming it’s not their job to fix any of those things.

There is no relationship and that’s just how I like it. The only thing social media ever did for me was have some old boyfriends try to get in touch with me. No thank you, not interested. I never go on social media now.

I’m part of a few forums. Other than that, I don’t do social media…

I use it too much and I’m definitely trying to cut back. I might need to go cold turkey. I catch myself just scrolling at random and it’s such a time suck!

I used to post all of the time. I would post about every vacation, night out, dinner…it was annoying as hell and I’m actually working on deleting off so many older memories. And I can tell you that I know I was looking for attention from my posts. Now, I actually see how detrimental all of the oversharing can be and I just choose to not post often. No one needs to know what I am doing with my free time. I still haven’t posted that we got married in November. We just tell people when we see them.

I keep FB around mainly for Marketplace and some groups, but I barely post.  And IG is more for pictures and I like keeping it around.  I don’t post often and mainly when I do it’s about my dog.

The only social media I have is Facebook and I really only use it for keeping in touch. I rarely post anything esp since the pandemic started. I have a look through the newsfeed in the morning and do the happy birthday’s then have a quick scroll through in the evening. I do have a very large block list, guarantee if someone is on it they have sent me a ‘hey gurrrrl, how’d you like to buy my mlm crap’ message at some stage.

I used to post somewhat regularly, but I completely stopped during COVID and don’t think i’ll go back. (I do occasionally still check them mainly to see peoples kids)

It started off because I didn’t have much to post during COVID. Not much was happening, and the stuff that was happening was negative.

But then I just realized that I don’t benefit in any way from my life being on display – especially to a bunch of people I rarely/never talk to directly. Even when it’s not impacting me NEGATIVELY It takes me out of the moment and makes me more aware of how my life looks to other people – which is something I don’t want to care about.

I really like to stay connected on FB. I have moved a lot and my family is already out so it helps me keep in touch. I can watch my friends’ kids growing up, graduating, and getting married. I spend a lot of time on there on my day’s off but I don’t think it negatively effects my life. I almost never use Instagram.

I’ve never used Instagram. I’d like to stop using Facebook, but I’m in a few groups with wonderful people, and I do use marketplace. I think I’m stuck with it for now.

I gave up Instagram 5 years ago, Twitter and Facebook 9 years ago.  It been pure bliss with limited and then no social media.  I worried that I’d miss out on things, but I only miss out on things I never cared about anyway.  The people who mean a lot to me are still in my life.  And it means so much more when a friend reaches out.

I deactivated Facebook last year for good. For about two years prior that I didn’t post much. Before that I used it a lot. When I stopped using it so much I had to actively be like – why do I want to post this? I don’t need to be checking in places or telling everyone about everything I’m doing. And it was quite self reflective actually because it’s become such a standard part of my life. But I ended up pretty much hating facebook. Mindless scrolling about things and people I don’t really care about. And so many mean people. Even on the most innocent post, people turn things political, yell at each other, and act nasty. I don’t mean my friends but like on a public post from a page. I do still have Instagram though and I post once in awhile. Usually pics of my cats and animals in my yard lol. But the thing about posting for attention/validation – I think all social media posts and photos are for that. Otherwise what’s the point? I don’t know why I feel the need to post those pics on Instagram, but I still do it. However I really like that they give the option to hide likes somewhat now.
