Ours is also starting at 6pm, ending at 11pm, and we will also be having an after party.

Just comething to consider – if you are extending the party past 5 hours (which is pretty much standard time from what I’ve seen anyway) it will be on your dime. If everyone meets up at a bar after, it will be on theirs. I think paying for 5 hours of party is plenty in my view lol.

Our cocktail hour starts at 6 and reception goes until 11. I don’t think it’s too early! We were planning on going out afterwards since we will be really close to Ybor City/club/bar area BUT Fiance and I are flying out early the next morning so may not or maybe just for an hour. I am sure our friends will keep the party going somewhere else on THEIR dime, not mine.

cocktail hour 7-8

because i found my venue at a bridal show, i got an extra hour included, otherwise it would have been 8-11.

Five hours is more then enough time.  For you, as the bride, it will fly by and you wish you had more time, but for guests, five hours is a lot.

For our wedding we had the typical 4 hour reception and it ended at 10pm.  Once we dropped gifts and stuff off at the hotel and quickly freshened up, myself and a bunch of our friends headed to a local bar (left hotel at about 11ish) until about 1:30 and then called it a night.  And the way we spread the word about the bar was we told people that we were going to head to X bar after the reception.  This way if they wanted to come they could, but we wouldn’t be on the hook to have to pay for them.

Hi Bee!Our cocktail hour starts at 5 and dinner is served at 6pm we have the reception place until 11:00. However we are in a great location and plan to go to the hotel to change then go to some of the breweries that are close by! I think 11:00 is the perfect ending time 🙂

tinker44:  ah I see. I think it’s thoughtful of you to think like that, but to be honest, some guests might think over five hours might be a little long anyway, and by not extending it to a sixth you are still saving money, so my original point stands lol.

This is our rough timeline for the moment:

3:30: ceremony

4-5:30: drinks, lawn games, photos

5:45-6:45: dinner, toasts

7-9:30: dancing, cake, etc.

So, about 6 hours, though we might cut the dancing short. It probably depends on your crowd. Our wedding guests will be mostly older family members and our friends (who are in their early to late 30s)–I don’t think they would last past 10. 🙂 I found this post to be very helpful: http://apracticalwedding.com/2013/03/calculate-wedding-timeline/
