The poll needs a “more than” option.   We spend most of our fun money on food and go to the grocery for fresh bread and produce every day.  Most nights we have a salad.  For produce, nice cheese, bread, milk for morning coffee, and a bottle of wine, a typical trip to the store costs around $30.  Times seven…  Plus lunch which we eat out at work…  Way over $125 without occasional fancy dinners out.

It’s amazing how much you can save when you don’t eat out. We used to eat out once a week and we were spending $150-$200 a week, but we’ve cut that out and I’ve started couponing. Now we’re spending between $50-$60 a week and that includes breakfast, lunch and dinner for the 2 of us, toiletries, alcohol, and dog food. I’ve also found restaurants.com which offers amazing deals on restaurant gift certs, so when a special occasion comes around we can go out and not feel like we crushed our budget. Today I got a $25 gift cert to a restaurant we love for only $3! It’s definitely possible to make groceries one of your smallest expenses.

There are just 2 of us (with 2 cats but they don’t cost much). Food plus toiletries, garbage bags, detergent, etc comes to roughly $130 a week on average. Some weeks it’s lower, some it’s higher. We both pack lunches for work every day and eat dinner at home on the weeknights. Originally, I planned for a $75/week food budget and found that it just wouldn’t work for us. My man likes his meat so that brings the number up a bit as well.

We have 1 kid, and spend about $60 a week on food. It would be a bit lower, but SO LOVES to eat out at lunch time.

We buy chicken at sams club, lots of veggies, shop local sales/dicount stores and I coupon like crazy. The chicken at sams club is $1.99 a pound in our area and thats a great deal! We use that plus ground chicken from a local farmer that sells for .99 a pound.

I love to cook so I make a bunch of stuff by hand. Overall I think we eat a great variety, but have have a nice, modest budget

I spend about $300 a month, and that includes dog food. We do a lot of shopping at Costco, Included in this is all organic milk, eggs from a local farm, and organic meat (just a bit pricier). We go out to eat MAYBE once a month, sometimes less.

wow, i thought we spent alot. i try to keep it under $50/week but sometimes it’s over depending if we need things like shampoo, toothpaste, etc. but i am a vegan so i eat mostly fruits and  vegetables which are super cheap. i’m pretty sure the only thing i buy for myself thats more than $1 is soymilk. i cook every night except maybe one night on the weekends.

Wow I am impressed at folks who manage to spend way less. We live in NYC area and end up eating out atleast 2x a week for dinner, thatz what I voted. Not sure if that meant lunch too in poll (mostly eat out). I like to buy organic food and the store near my home is very expensive. So ya if we don’t plan ahead for week, end up spending way much more. otherwise it runs about $125 not including dinners out.

I have a really well stocked pantry so that when I do my weekly shopping its mostly along the lines of Bread, Milk, produce, lunch meat, etc. so I tend to stick in the $40 to $50 range. One of the supermarkets near me has awesome buy 1 get 1 or 2 free deals on meat all the time that I can stock up on.

Any non-edible item, I try to avoid the grocery store at all costs and use coupons if I have them. I tend to hit up Walmart once a monthish for those things. I may also buy some food there if I need to stock up on pantry items.

***If you have one near you, go to Ocean State Job Lot for spices, oils, vinager, etc… MUCH cheaper than the grocery store. Don’t over looks the Dollar Tree where everything is $1.

We also have a Costco membership that we use for detergent, TP, paper towels, napkins, peanut butter, lunch snacks (chips, etc) and sandwich wraps. We go there every other month I think, but only stock up every 3-4 months.

FH brings his lunch nearly every day as do I, but I eat more lunches out. We try to limit dinners out to 1 or 2 a week.

We usually go on a bi-weekly basis, and it usually runs us between $90 and $150 when we go.
