We received a brown table lamp and when you turned it on, the word “Family” showed up on the shade along with the outline of a tree.  I know it was the thought that counts but it was BAD!

I got the Joy of Cooking (1979 Edition) for Christmas a few years ago from a notorious family re-gifter.  And then, the following Christmas, I got the Joy of Cooking, 2002 edition.  LOL

My mom bought us small footstools and left one in each of our bathrooms. I asked “mom why did you buy us those footstools” and she responds “I saw on Dr.Oz that humans are supposed to mimic dogs when they go number two, so by putting your feet on the stool, it helps you to arch your body & do the act properly.”

My husband and I just cracked up, and he says, “it’s so nice that your mom wants us to be regular.” hahaha! Thats my mom!

@AnnieAAA: lol!

At my shower, in addition to our new flatware, my mom gave me two Armani (I think? Some famous Italian designer) plates with the Japanese symbol for hope on them.  They came in really nice packaging, and I guess they were decent-looking plates, but I couldn’t even begin to fathom why she got them for me.  She proudly announced, “I won them at a church raffle!  You like Japan, so I thought they would be perfect.”

…Um, thanks?  I’m sad to announce it, but we donated them to the Salvation Army less than 48 hours later.

We didn’t get any weird gifts from our wedding or shower since everyone either gave cash or stuck to the registry but my cousin did give Darling Husband and I a heated toilet seat for Christmas last year. In order for us to use it we would have to run an extension cord since the only outlet in both bathrooms is by the sink about 10 feet away. Obviously that’s not going to happen. To be honest, I’m also a little concerned that Darling Husband will electrocute himself with his failure to aim properly, lol. The toilet seat is still in the box and ready for the perfect moment (and individual) to be re-gifted. Nothing says ‘I love you’ like a toilet seat for Christmas. 🙂

I got plastic molds to make martini glasses out of. Um, thanks? How are you supposed to enjoy your cocktail when your glass is melting down your arm? We still have them sitting around, not sure if it’s a worthy gag re-gift or we should just get rid of it!

Mine is a Christmas gift from a long time ago – but I will never forget it. My step-dad’s crazy sister (who he has minimal communication with because she is BSC) sent us a huge box one year with Christmas gifts. It had DIRECTIONS on how to OPEN IT…like, pull Tab A and Tab C so as not to rip the paper. I’m not joking.

It gets better. My enclosed gift (also with instructions on how to open it) was a pen…shaped like a girl…with hair made of yarn. It was the strangest thing. I didn’t have a clue what to do with it. I was like 12.

My best friend, who I’ve known since I was 6, is notorious for getting me bad gifts. If you tell her you like a certain thing, she will get anything and everything relating to that topic, no matter how ugly it is. As a result, I’ve learned to hate a lot of stuff I used to love because I’m so sick of getting crappy gifts.

I (used to) like monkeys and palm trees. She got me a gigantic bulletin board shaped like a big monkey (for my 23rd birthday. Really?!) Then one year she gave me a hideous long white skirt with embroidered palm trees all over it. (I never wear white OR skirts). A few Christmases ago she bought me this ugly sparkly brooch of a monkey sitting in a palm tree. I mean, the thought is what counts, but come on! How many years does she know me?

Needless to say, all of that stuff had been donated!

My brother and SIL were given a big, heavy, glass vase as well as a family of ceramic loons. This would have been a fine gift, if a bit weird (loons?), except for the fact that they live in Thailand and had the wedding in Toronto. I have no idea how the gift giver expected them to lug these heavy and breakable things all the way back to Thailand!

@Lemma: LOL!  That is exactly why when I was a bridesmaid at the US wedding of an American and a Brit who planned to live in London after the wedding, I gave them a heavy set of good knives… that I ordered off their Amazon.co.uk registry and had shipped to their house.
