Mattress, food – I rarely get homebrand of anything, medication, healthcare, glasses and contact lenses, and my engagement ring.

ETA: vacations

Bridey77:  I’m with you on the peanut butter! Cheap PB can taste rancid sometimes. Ick!

Also, like

My car is also nice-ish too. Not indulgent like a BMW but I bought a nice, two year old car used. Considering how much I use it, it’s worth it!

Groceries – I spend extra for fresh, organic, local, hormone-free etc, running shoes, makeup/skincare, pillows, sheets, knives (this is after buying cheap knives that rusted really quickly), lingerie, and my most used electronics like my phone, laptop, and TV. Traveling outside of the US. Pet food as many others have said.

Typing that out I was beginning to question what I don’t splurge on, but the first thing that came to mind is that I like all kinds of wine, even cheap wine!

@soon2bS: I like to splurge on everything, but I try to buy only the things I need – food, clothing, shelter, technology and transportation. Fiance spoils me though – he gets us tickets to shows, movies, etc. as a special treat.

I’m lucky to work in an industry where they give us a lot. I can get towels from vendors, t-shirts, food, vacations, etc. from work.

I wear things into the ground — I still have clothes and bags from college that I regularly wear, so it’s worth it to me to pay extra for quality.

I don’t wear prints, only solids. It helps keep things classic.

Mattress, linens, cosmetics/skin are products, clothes, handbags, and shoes are mMy splurges.  Oh yes and organic fruits, veggies, dairy, and meat products.  I splurged on my car because at the time I was driving a ton for work and it is so comfortable to drive. Unfortunately, that makes for speedy repairs, service, and gas.

I’ll skimp on name brand cleaning products, paper products, some grocery items, and certain beauty products like hairspray, mousse, nail grooming products, name brand cold/cough/other OTC medications (except for vitamins), first aid supplies.

ETA: health insurance as mentioned by another bee. I have quite a few chronic, hard to manage conditions so I must “splurge” on good insurance, although it’s more of a necessity for me.

Food – I am very picky about food being good quality and will pay what I need to for that quality.

Cookware – Again, more food snobery.

Hair products – I’ve got very fine hair and buy fairly expensive products to make it look not so icky.

Vacations – Hard not to splurge there, I guess I’s good I rarely take one.

MY WEDDING – Ugh, lol.

travel 🙂 in the last twelve months we’ve been to germany, scotland, florida, morocco, spain twice and we’re planning a trip to greece!

we’re grad students though, and so we cheap out on lots of other things to be able to afford it. we only buy from the farmer’s market which is way cheaper than the supermarket, barely drink, hardly ever eat out (my fi is a killer cook!) and just plain do without as far as new clothes etc that we don’t need goes.

Travel. It’s a priority for us, so that is where a lot of our money goes!

Bed. Makes a world of difference to have a good bed.

Shoes. Same as above.

Cookware. I love to cook, so I like nice kitchen products that will last me years and years.

Computers. I’ll spend a decent amount on a laptop or desktop that I know will last me a long time and give me the power I need.

@atacrossroads:  What is a good soy candle? I’m always on the look out for good scented candles, and I do like soy. It just seems like they are never as strongly scented as the yankee.
I’m hoping to get a diamond candle for my birthday 🙂

I’m super frugal and will wait for a store-wide sale or a good coupon to stock up on my must-haves rather than pay full price as much as possible. This works well for us so we generally don’t have to splurge. If the items below never went on sale again I would pay full price forever for great quality:

Groceries- non negotiable we eat clean, free range and organic only

Health and hygeine products, skin care products, makeup and makeup brushes

cookware and kitchen appliances

hand bags and shoes

hobbies- (mostly related to the arts and travel) lessons, materials and experiences

bedding and linens

I’m VERY frugal.. but things I WON’T skip out on are :

– car/home repairs.. we always repair them right away, if it waits, it normally causes more damage.

– cell phones.. we hardly use them but won’t get rid of them in case of emercencies.

– AAA.. seriously, over the past few years we’ve had our [or other vehicles] towed like 12 times.. we’ve saved SOOO much on towing fees.

– Hygiene supplies.. and to some extent makeup, but, i don’t wear really expensive makeup as it is.

– Our WoW Subscriptions.. because really, that is our major form of entertainment.

– Christmas/mothers day/fathers day gifts.. refuse to skip out on anything like that.
