@ellebeerob:  I had a friend on facebook who just went through a bunch of them searching for the perfect monitor and she said the Summer Infant Color Monitor is the best.  She said to stay away from all Sony.

I bought the Baby Bargains book and it saved me during my registry.  I was literally sitting on the floor of Babies R Us with the book open in front of the monitor section.  The angel care ones got awful reviews.  I ended up registering for the Summer Infant video one.  I don’t remember if it’s color or not.

Seriously, though, that book was a life saver across every product category!

+1 on the recommendation of the Baby Bargains Book.

That said, Darling Husband really wanted a video monitor and so we are getting this one from my parents: http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-MBP33-Wireless-Monitor-Infrared/dp/B004VL2VRY/ref=br_it_dp_o_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=37CZ9W2RQBFLT&coliid=I1COXVOFM6W0I4

It’s expensive I know, but seems to get the most consistently good reviews. Baby monitor shopping is hard! It almost seems like a “best of the worst” kind of choice.

I have the Angelcare Baby Movement and Sound Monitor and we absolutly love it! I am constantly aware that my baby is breathing and doing well.. If for some reason my baby stops breathing it will alert me right away so I can run in and pick him up. I wouldnt have chose any other monitor.. except maybe the angelcare that has video. ๐Ÿ™‚ But we dont find that needed until he is older

I opted to get the Foscam IP camera and use as a baby monitor. I wanted to be able to view anywhere (phone and computer) and use as a nanny cam. It also has 2 way audio so I can talk to the baby (through my phone) and I can hear what’s going on.It does require some technical know how to set it up, but it’s way cheaper than some of the other options

@iRun2004:  That’s the monitor we have and I LOVE it… I read so many reviews and was still worried that I’d have issues with it, but so far, no problems at all! I can see and hear baby really well, even when it’s pitch black. It’s awesome.

Motorola MBP33 Wireless Video Baby Monitor with Infrared Night Vision and Zoom 2.8″ Color LCD: http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-MBP33-Wireless-Monitor-Infrared/dp/B004VL2VRY/ref=br_it_dp_o_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=ZVPAEFZ027JB&coliid=I1HNC7YF28EODO

I also have the Snuza Portable Baby Movement Monitor and I love it too. I’ve never had a false alarm, and it gives me a lot of peace of mind. If you get it, remember to take it to the hospital with you… I was most nervous about baby’s breathing when she was rooming in with us right after she was born (since it had taken her awhile to get her breathing together). http://www.amazon.com/Snuza-Portable-Baby-Movement-Monitor/dp/B002WLGV08/ref=br_it_dp_o_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=ZVPAEFZ027JB&coliid=I31VI7ZIBH20F

We got the AngelCare monitor (without video) and I love it.  It is the only reason I can sleep at night.

Honestly I wish we had splurged and got the video version!
