I drive a 2005 2WD Nissan Xterra and I love it and plan to drive it until the wheels come off and won’t go back on, lol.  Fiance has a 2006 Nissan Sentra so we usually take his on little trips around town and mine when we go on trips and whatnot.  We were just gifted a 2013 Honda Accord which I think we’re going to try and use sparingly to keep the mileage down.  Our plan is to get a new SUV (or crossover of some sort) when we have kids…gotta have something safe!

A little 2009 Toyota Yaris 4 door Hatchback – I LOVE it!  It’s tiny but so comfortable, amazing on gas, and the hatchback & 4 door configuration make it great for carrying stuff since, let’s be honest, I’m the only person in the car 90% of the time.  I added snow tires and a trailer hitch for my bike rack which has turned it into a great little adventure mobile.  It actually handles great in the snow – a lot better than my Honda Civic used to.

Plus it’s bright blue.  I call it my little jelly bean.

We have a Audi Q5, its a great car but if you’re looking for something good on fuel. This is not it. We mostly do city driving, and share a car so its not an issue for us.. But premium fuel prices are a killer and its a fairly large tank.

I would also suspect it may be too small for your needs. I don’t haul anything and have found myself thinking “This doesn’t fit as much as I thought it would” on a few occasions. They do make a bigger version (Q7) but the whole look is different and it would be even worse on gas, it depends what your deal breakers are in a car.. Perhaps its not fuel economy since you’re used to driving a truck, in that case, Audi’s are great cars. The Audi Care program is excellent.

I have a 2012 Jeep patriot. I wanted a SUV but not a huge gas guzzler and this one is perfect!

I have a 2012 Prius C and I love it!

My hubby and I commute around 100 miles roundtrip to and from work everyday and its usually highway driving.  The Prius has become a lifesaver.  It’s  so awesome on gas and drives very well.  It only costs us around $30 dollars to fill it up and we really only need to fill up every 4-5 days. In comparison, we used to have a Honda Accord and that was costing me $60 dollars every 3 days!

I drive a 2012 Ford Escape which is great on gas, great in the snow (I live near the Rockies in Canada) and can fit quite a bit of stuff.  If you were getting a car, I’d give the Mazda3’s a shot.  My husband and I both had one (I had the hatchback, he had the sedan) and they were amazing in snow (with snowtires on) sporty and fun, great on gas.  And I could fit quite a bit with the back seats folded down in the hatchback ๐Ÿ™‚

NowMrsS:  I’m a teacher too!  I drive a Ford Edge.  I bought it brand new and it is AWESOME!  Not bad on gas at all (compared to larger SUV’s/trucks) and so much space!  I coach as well and there is tons of space for everything in there.  I have no plans at all to get another car, even though I’ve had it now for 6 years!

I have a 1999 BMW 328i (it’s older, but it runs great, I’ve done few repairs and it’s paid for). My SO drives a 2006 Infinit G35 <– I think is the number on the back.

A Honda Pilot Touring. I LOVE it. You can get a used one for a decent price, and they can last forever.

Edit to add: the touring has 4WD, but still gets decent gas mileage and has nice inside features as well.

I have a 2014 Chevy Equinox LTZ…It’s a great and solid crossover and even though it’s AWD, I find the gas mileage is pretty decent.
