I am planning a birthday party for Mr. Library this coming weekend. He knows about it, and we went out email invites months ago to make sure we gave people enough time to look over schedules. Most of our friends live in Massachusetts (Mr. Library went to school there) and we live in Maine so that I can finish up a teaching requirement for the state. It’s been hard n Mr. Library to live so far away from Boston, but he rarely complains and has been looking forward to seeing his friends. We go see his friends every chance we get, which is something like once a month due to finances. He hasn’t had a birthday party since he was in eighth grade and he has been really excited at the prospect of having one again with his buddies.
Fast-forward to this week. Mr. Library sent out a reminder email because no one had RSVPed. Three days go by. Nothing. No one has said anything. I sent out another email to let them know that it would mean a lot to Mr. Library if they could all be there and that he misses all of them a lot. I got two messages today that said, “Oh, we wish we could, but we didn’t know soon enough. I guess we’ll have to catch you later.” Excuse me? Soon enough? We emailed you MONTHS ago! And this is from two people in his groomsquad from our wedding! No one has said anything else either! Some of them have an excuse (they are at a wedding this weekend), so that’s okay, but the rest of them could simply say yes or no.
What kinds of friends blow off a birthday party or don’t say anything?
