Dark - I love the rich, deep tones

    Medium - I can't decide so I'm going neutral

Light - I love the openness it gives to a room

@MrsPanda99:  Dark. Tell Mr. Panda that he will not regret it! We have something similar to this, but Oak. And Light Gray walls.

I am such a renovation nerd right now that I am LOVING these pictures!!!!

I’m 28 and one of my favorite things to say to my Fiance is “This is how you know you’re almost 30….”

    Last week I said

“This is how you know you’re almost 30…. when you cry over the septic system.

When you’re more excited about going to Home Depot than Forever 21.

When you save for months for a hardwood floor instead of a handbag.”

Anyone have any more to share? How do YOU know you’re almost 30?

@MrsPanda99:  I love me some dark dark flooring. but we have a dog. and said dog sheds like a mo-fo. so we’ve agreed that something in the middle of the road will be best for concealing the hair since, lets be honest, who has time to vacuum/ swiffer every effing day.

and light floors are just ugly. outta the question! (plus they show mud/ dirt/ etc… i’m realizing i sound like a slob- im not- i just dont like cleaning the floor daily!)

We have a light blonde bamboo in our townhouse and I love how modern and fresh it looks! I can see darker wood working better in a home with a more traditional style of architecture, though. Ours is ultra modern, so I think the light looks better.

I love the aesthetics of dark floors, but I worry it might look dated in a few years.  I’m not a fan of light colored floors at all.  I would go with medium. I still think medium floors are beautiful and you wouldn’t have to worry about it going out of style in a few years.  I also think that medium floors would appeal to the most renters.  Our rental has medium wood floors and we love them.  The place we were considering before we decided on our current place had light wood floors which we didn’t like.  Location was the deciding factor for us, but we definately considered the floor color as well.  I think you can’t go wrong with medium.

I like a dark medium, which is what we have. Too dark and it shows a lot of wear easily, and I’ve never liked light.

@blondie_bride:  Our light floors don’t show dirt quickly, actually. I think the bamboo texture helps with that. We also live in the Bay Area, so maybe it’s a factor of us not having weather, really – mud, snow, etc are not a thing here. We also have a dog and cat, and things don’t start looking dirty until about a week without cleaning.

In our current home we have dark, almost black floors. They’re terrible and I wouldn’t wish them on my worst enemy. Unless you don’t have pets, then they may be ok, but they show EVERYTHING. Every knick, every hair, every crumb, every scuff.. I vacuum at least once a day.

In our new home, which was bought preconstruction, we went light floors. I didn’t like the developers choices and had something different in mind, but we may end up keeping them.. they’re greyish brown?

    I’d go light!

@Miss Leopard:  you should start a thread for that one! I’m in the same boat, I know I’m almost 30 because all I’ve been buying lately is stuff for my home. And am as excited for our kitchen reno as I used to be for new purses and shoes.

I didn’t read previous posts so perhaps this was already noted but if you have pets, scratches are more easily hidden on lighter floors.  DH and I redid our floors with maple hardwood and went with a medium-dark colour.  The maple is a hard enough wood so scratches aren’t too bad but if you get a softer wood it would scratch and show so bad.  And fur… omg the fur.  I have to sweep every single day with the darker wood.

I tend to like the look of darker floors in larger spaces.  In a smaller area or room, I think the light floors really open the space up.  The only color I don’t like is that honey colored oak from the 80s.

We just bought our house about 3 months ago. It has dark hardwood floors. We initally loved the way it looked. We would have definitely gone with dark hardwood. But now that I’ve lived with it it’s driving me insane. I can’t keep them clean! I think I could sweep/mop every day and it would show dust. So, in hindsight I would go with something else.

I think I kinda lean towards the paler hardwoods too… they looks so natural and beautiful!  Sorry if this pic is huge.

I’ve always loved hardwood, and have had it in various houses that I’ve lived in… lol, right back to the 1970s and the days of Parkay.  LOVE WOOD FLOORS

Personally, I’d say go with something medium vs too dark or too light.  Only because it probably won’t date itself so much.

Dark wood is very fashionable right now… be it floors, wood furniture etc

But I am guessing that this trend is going to begin to move soon (if it hasn’t already) as dark woods have been in for around 10 years now

Mr TTR & I like to go to model homes / Designer Showcases etc, and I am already seeing more and more homes doing different flooring treatments… and wood floors in lighter colours (Greys, Barnwood, etc)

IMO there is something to said for traditonal oak / beech / birch / maple floors… they truly go with everything, and are quite timeless.

I think of the many Victorians I’ve been in… the Montreal Walkups, Toronto Brownstones etc… all with their deep baseboards and heavy wooden casings, even when they aren’t left natural, and someone paints out these features, still the medium coloured wood floors are the stars !!

So ya, that is the way I’d go.

    Hope this helps,
