I thought of this after seeing Ms. Swan’s beautiful “mini-moon” pictures. We are going to Charleston, SC for our honeymoon. We aren’t staying in the states necessarily for budget reasons – we just wanted to go there. We don’t need to take a short vacation – we’ll be staying for a whole week. Yet I feel like it counts as a “mini-moon” because we aren’t leaving the country.
What makes a honeymoon a mini-moon? The length of the trip? Where you go? The budget?

I don’t know the actual definition. I am using mini-moon to mean the 2 night trip we take to an outer island (Lanai) a few days after our wedding, because I have to get back to school soon thereafter. 6 months later we will go on our ‘real’ honeymoon…the more expensive, longer international trip when we have more time. I wonder if I’ll get honeymoon discounts and upgrades even if it’s 6 months later.

I would define “mini-moon” as a small, less expensive trip you take right away after the wedding when you are planning a more elaborate “honeymoon” at a later date. If that makes sense…
Our wedding was 8/22 and we took a 5 day “mini-moon” after our wedding- somewhere we could drive, and then are taking our full honeymoon in February to the Caribbean.

Yup, whenever I’ve heard of other people say mini-moon, its just a shorter trip, not necessarily inexpensive. A lot of people don’t have the time they’d need off from work so they do an really nice trip maybe like 3 nights somewhere. So I don’t think yours counts, yours is a full honeymoon! Have a great time when ya do go :o)

I’d say shorter and less expensive. We took two days and spent them in Amish Country. If we were to do it over, I’d add at least one more day.

I think it’s all in the eye of the beholder. My husband and I went to Seattle, and we were there for 3 days (plus essentially one day on each end flying to and from the east coast). It was our full-blown honeymoon. We spent what seemed like an ungodly amount to us, but a pittance compared to a lot of honeymoons I’ve read about here.

I consider ours a minimoon because we had to delay our two week honeymoon in Europe till December because of law school for me. So we are staying at a nice hotel on the same part of Miami that we are getting married for about three nights & just disconnect and enjoy our first newlywed days! Then, I just know its Europe, b/c FI’s planning everything and tells me wedding night – so the hotel stay days after the wedding is our “minimoon!” I will be staying at the hotel since Friday, sleeping alone and having my bridal suite there, then after the wedding our minimoon commences in the same place/room 🙂

So I guess what really makes it a mini-moon is if you are going on your “true” honeymoon later! I guess sometimes I feel like our honeymoon isn’t that big of a deal because we are staying in the States, but I am SO looking forward to our relaxing, low-key trip!
