Was talking about this at work today, so I thought it would be interesting to hear from more people… what percentage of your total wedding budget did you spend on your wedding dress?
For purposes of this post, “total wedding budget” includes all wedding related expenses, but not engagement ring(s) or honeymoon.

My dress, including alterations was right about 6% of my total budget.

Dress + Veil + Shoes was about 3% of the total budget. I was really against spending a lot on the dress. I would never sacrafice something important to our guests comfort (great food, open bar, transportation) so I could spend a ton of money on a dress I’ll wear for half a day.

@sailor: I got my dress in a sale and was £500 below my budget 🙂 I honestly think that at the end of the day in reality it is a dress you’re only going to wear for 8 hours in total. Got my dream dress though! Probably only about 5% of my budget.

I think my dress was maybe 6% of our total budget. Not sure.

Mine was just under 5%. 25% of the budget seems really high so the rest just seem way out there to me, will be interested to see how the poll turns out here.

it was about 7% of the total budget.

Mine was about 8%.
FWIW, my budget is $12,000, and I’m paying one of my best friends $1000 (including all materials, alterations, etc) to design and make my dress for me. That was the price I proposed. I’m sure she would have done it for less, but I think she deserves to be well paid for the kind of care and attention she’s putting into it – not to mention all her time!

Mine was roughly 5%, including alterations (i hope, it hasn’t been altered yet!)

I voted 10-25%.
Not because I have a super expensive dress, but because the rest of my budget is low. (Total budget is $10K, my dress with alterations and accessories will be around $1400-1500.)

My dress would have been about 6% of my budget (not counting alterations or any accessories). But my mom loved it so much that she offered to pay for it as a wedding gift, along with my veil.

Mine was about twelve percent, give or take. We’re having an open bar, good food and a convenient and nice location, though, so I’m not leaving my guests out in the cold! We’re definitely cutting costs in other ways, but my mom wanted to make the dress a bit of a splurge and I was pretty happy to oblige!

Probably about 5% of our budget went to my dress… or maybe less, actually. For us the reception hall (food upgrades) and the photographer were our most important expenses.
