Ok, we all worry that some of the things we are doing will seem too trendy/overplayed (at least I worry about that) when in reality no one who isn’t all over wedding websites for months on end has any clue that these trends exist. Most guests will probably have no clue that things like mason jars or peacock feathers or vintage broaches are not the unique inspiration of that particular bride.
So tell me, what trends have you seen on wedding websites/blogs that seem like they might be getting over done (or just common), but that you have actually never seen in real life? Bonus points if you are including it in your wedding yourself!
Here are some of mine. I have never seen:
a candy buffet
a birdcage veil
any hair accessory other than a traditional veil
a dress with pick-ups (except my own!)
mason jars (I’m doing this one)
colorful uplighting (is this a trend? It seems to be on tv weddings a lot)
a friend-officiant (a rather nice trend, if I do say so myself! I just haven’t seen one)
a flip flop basket
a photo booth
a signature drink
and I could go on, but I’m interested to hear what others think… No offense to anyone if you are doing something I have listed here as a trend. They aren’t necessarily bad things. Some of them become trends because they are so awesome, and the whole point of this thread is that you shouldn’t be afraid to do them because no one in real life has seen most of these things!

i’ve only been to 7 weddings, but i’ve never seen the late night snack bar (which i LOVE), signature drink, or videographer.

I’ve never seen a brooch bouquet used at a wedding, but I would really like to!

Never seen a cake buffet or anything other than a cake being used in lieu of a cake. Never seen a photobooth, flip flop basket or OOT bags. Also never seen bunting or those adorable round paper lanterns.

@Miss BBQ: I once went to a wedding that did pie instead of cake. That was AWESOME!

Like Ms. Meowerson, I haven’t had the opportunity to experience a photobooth or late night snacks, both which I think would be super fun. I have seen candy buffets. I haven’t seen cupcakes or french macaroons but I do feel like they’re EVERYWHERE, haha. I also haven’t seen bridal party members wear converses yet.

I’ve seen a candy bar, signature drink (that’s been around forever), birdcage veil, late night snack bar and on Saturday I’m going to a peacock wedding. But that’s about it.

im doing a signature drink (rasberry margarita martini) with a twist ..i ordered a martini luge and im having silk orchids frozen into into it
we are doing uplighting and a lounge around the luge.. i bought all of my girls flip flops instead of shoes so they are comfy and i also got them all turquoise victorias secret velour suits to change into midway through the reception when the paty starts!

The only wedding I’ve seen a candy buffet, a photobooth, a cardbox, DIY details, groom and best man wearing converse, a friend officiant, ecofetti and customized vows was at my own.
I’ve never seen:
- Sig drink
- Late night snacks (wanted to do this SO bad at mine!)
- Flip flop baskets
- OOT Bags
- Birdcage Veils
- Sparkler send off
- Outdoor vintage wedding, which is what I wanted SO BAD.

@julieandjaiden: That is adorable! I wanted to have The Varsity (Atlanta greasy tradition!) bring burgers/onion rings/hot dogs at the end of the night but I actually had a tiff with the catering manager and then obviously couldn’t use them. 🙁 It was sad they were such buttholes, because it would have been awesome.

I haven’t seen a birdcage veil, the mason jars, the uplighting, or the flipflop basket. I also haven’t seen the photo booth, but I plan on doing it for my wedding, so does that count? :p My cousin had a hat/hair accessory that was made of feathers AND the pickups on the dress. Her dress was also red! I’ve also seen a signature drink and the candy bar.

@Laylabelle: Ok, I have got to tell my parents someone on the wedding forums wanted to have The Varsity cater their wedding, they won’t believe it. 🙂 My dad went to GA Tech and my parents have great memories of eating there. When they took my sister and me to Atlanta when we were little, that was the number one place they wanted to take us to visit. I remember being confused, like, it’s just hamburgers guys. Now I can see how fantastic it would be to have them provide late night snacks for a wedding, that’s too bad it didn’t work out!
This is a great thread, I’ve been interested in this as well. I haven’t been to enough weddings in recent years to provide data myself though. It does strike me as odd that I’m sick of some of these trends when I’ve never actually seen any of them in real life!
