diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds = precious
diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds, amethysts = historically precious
As we exhaust our mines, we may add to the precious list.

A very beautiful and elegant color when compared to pink sapphire =)

Wow. I had no idea amethyst used to be precious. Amethyst geode samples don’t cost very much. That’s pretty cool.

Morganite (at least that is what I think this picture is!), I love the delicate pink color!

Padparadscha sapphire – one with a lot of sparkle and I nice mix of orangy pink tones like this
or my Malaya garnet that changes color

Cool color…it’s my birthstone. 🙂
I have my dream ring….sapphire.

WOW we have a very similar ring. Only mine is pyrope red garnet and one side stone on each side not three majorairhead:

oooh – love that red pyrope! I want one like that someday 🙂 I have an Almondine but the red is so dark it nearly looks black unless the light is shining directly on it. I want one where you can really see the red in all lighting.

love it and cant belive i got it for £45 majorairhead:

For semi-precious gemstones, a London Blue Topaz. Definitely. I love that stone so, so much.
ETA: Also, I love your user name!

I have a semiprecious gemstone engagement ring. It’s an Australian black opal. Mine is a mix of blues and green, but they come in other colors as well. Amethyst or blue topaz would be my next choice.

I would go with a faceted Labradorite, Sunstone or Moonstone. I love the shimmer in feldspars.

Haha, thanks XD and I love blue topaz as well. It’s like a nice mixture of sapphire and aquamarine =) I wish I could’ve been born in december instead of november (so much nicer than citrine).

Black opal is my absolute favorite! Especially when it looks like this:
But it’s a shame that it’s rather easy to break. Even triplets tend to crack within the first few months (at least for me) =(
