We have one bag/couple/room.  If that couple had kids with them, we gave two bags.

In them:

  • Water – 2
  • Granola Bars – 2
  • Oversize, homemade chocolate chip cookies – 2
  • Gum
  • Mints
  • Peanut Chews (candy from Philly)

I would include some snacks, bottled water, a map of the town, maybe? I wouldn’t bother with things like soap since the hotel will provide them :).

I would just leave one per family, but if it’s a large family, maybe you can put extra stuff in it versus one made for a single individual.

Oh, and we also provided an agenda for the wedding day.  For example: we had a shuttle bus, so it listed the times when the bus would do pickups.  We also had the address of the venue with driving directions incase people opted to drive.

We did one bag per room and included:

  • Timeline for the weekend
  • Directions to/from rehearsal dinner and ceremony
  • Things to do around Atlanta
  • Personalized water bottles
  • Old fashioned coke in bottle
  • candy
  • gum
  • granola bars
  • trail mix
  • chips
  • pretzels
  • fruit snacks

We got tons of compliments on the welcome bags. Our guests loved them!

Hey there, I like all of the ideas above.  I also suggest putting in some tylenol or advil packets.  People appreciate it if they get a hang over.  One per room/couple is appropriate.
