I would say six months because they should fit all through the winter. My SOs cousin just had a little girl who will be 3 months old next monht. But, i bought her six months clothes for Christmas.

Usually its 0-3, 3-6, 6-12, 12-18 months.

So i would get them the 3-6 month clothing.

Unless it is something very obviously seasonal (like a santa shirt or something) I would err on the side of too big so they can wear it longer.

@chasesgirl:  I agree.

Parents are probably bogged down with tons of baby wear.  I would skip ahead and buy 2yr or 3yr clothing.  Sounds crazy but kids grow fast and when the “new baby” gifts stop coming the parents will be grateful to have that outfit.

@chasesgirl:  +1, I just had my baby shower this past weekend and I think we got 60 3-6 mo. onesies, not even exaggerating. I would get some older kid clothes, and/or something off their registry. Don’t forget to include a gift receipt!!

Get whatever you can find cute and cheap!  Last season’s clothes are on sale – get them in 9mo or 12mo.  If it’s something they can wear year round, get whatever size you want, they’ll be happy to have it when all the sudden the kids don’t fit into their clothes anymore.  🙂

@Fallicious1012:  I’d aim for something that could be worn year round in a larger size – 12 mo+. Maybe 9m+. I ended up with a TON of clothes in 3-6m. I didn’t get as much in 6-12, but still a fair amount. I bought several newborn and 0-3m outfits myself… so for me, the bigger sizes would be most appreciated.

I honestly got most excited about the essential stuff I received off my registry… things that I was going to have to go out to buy if nobody else got it for us… bottles, diapers, etc. I know it doesn’t seem like an exciting gift, but I really appreciated that stuff.

Just something to keep in mind; calculate what season it will be for the age/size you are buying. For example, you may find some super cute sundresses in sz 3-6 or 6-12, but if it’ll be right in the middle of winter, it won’t be practical and chances are that it won’t get much wear, if at all.

In all honesty though, as PP mentioned, it would be better to get them items off the registry or a gift card. Some parents are rather particular about what clothes they want to dress their babies in (e.g. organic, gender neutral, etc.).

@baletrina:  This us what I do. I buy things 3 to 4 sizes too big for baby, That way, when she starts growing into that size, she has a few things!

I loved that when my son was small.

@MissFireFlower:  Those were a godsend when my daughter outgrew all my impulse NB buys and everyone else’s under 12m stuff.  Thank goodness someone thought ahead!
