I have a 1.01 carat and it has EIGHT prongs! It doesn’t overwhelm the diamond, and Tacori actually makes their sample rings/pictures with a one carat stone.

@dfutureNP:  If done properly, a six prong setting can work with any size diamond, because the prongs are sized to be in proportion with the stone as it gets smaller.  I think the smallest I saw was a 1/3 ct., though that in the store, so I don’t have a picture.

Having six also depends on the style of your ring – mine has peekaboo stones set beneath the center stone, so there is no room for six prongs, but I don’t work in a field where my hands are doing that much (I’m a reporter/writer), so its not really a concern for me.

Getting platinum (if in your budget) will help reduce the likelihood that there would be a problem with only having a four prong setting, as platinum is much harder to bend than gold.

Can’t wait to see your final ring! ๐Ÿ™‚

No photos but my 0.42 round brilliant diamond looks amazing in a six claw setting. I don’t think that the six prongs make it look too small at all.

i think prong size should be relative to stone size?
here is a 1ct (finger size 7)

i’m planning to re-set this stone into a russian style setting (also 6 prong, but with a reflector style head) and a ring style i ripped off a designer ๐Ÿ™‚
the prongs are more claw-like so you can barely see them. my mom has a ring with a 0.25 stone and earrings with 0.15 stones in this style of 6 prong settings and you can’t even see the prongs.

@ToBee:  I do not have a side picture. My Iphone camera does not do the ring justice at all!! Here is a link to my actual ring setting. My diamond is a 1.25ct H colored.

The original ring setting was supposed to be a 4 prong which is what you will see in the link above. They jewler added 2 more prongs becuase of the size of the diamond and the saftey of it. I love the 6 prong so much more than the 4 becuase it gives the overall diamond a nice round look instead of squaring it off.

I have a 1.25 ct oval with 6 prongs.  The prongs are not nearly as prominent as they look in the close-up photo.  The jeweler recommended 6 rather than 4 for security.
