My dear friend and cousin, let’s call her Elena, has, together with her bf, decided it’s time to get engaged. He is VERY well off, and can practically afford to buy her whatever she wants. They have been together for 4 years and has two kids, she is in her late twenties and he is in his mid thirties. But that shouldnt matter, since it’s supposed to be her forever ring!
She is at the moment trying to figure out what size diamond she wants, since she can practically pic her diamond of choice (lucky lady, huh!). She is a size 7, she says her fingers “look big and chunky”, but I don’t think they do though. She is leaning towards a emerald cut, but has not decided yet.
We are writing from my account since she doesn’t have one herself, and we saw another thread like this, but for smaller fingers, where a bee asked for the “perfect carat size” for her finger size, and now Elena and me are curious what size (and style!!!) the bees think is the most IDEAL on a tall woman with finger size 7. Long fingers. She likes big rocks but doesn’t want to come off as gaudy! (in other words, no 20 carat rock)
What size would YOU pic if you could choose any size you want, and lived in a area where 10 carat rocks isn’t THAT uncommon! 🙂

I am a 6.5 and have a 2.8ct antique cushion. So, not small but no where near 10ct. If I could have anything I wanted in the whole world, I would want something in the 6-8ct range that was around 12mm. Maybe slightly elongated, like 11x12mm. Size 7 is very close to my finger, so I would look for something in that same mm range. So roughly 8ct in an EC, IF she wants a HUGE rock on her finger. Even a 3-4ct EC is going to look big on her finger though. I do not feel like mine is big, but it is all relative and some people think it is huge, lol. It is 8.6mm for reference.

I love a 3 carat on me-it’s the perfect blingy size, but not over the top. Unfortunately, we can’t afford a 3 carat, so I have a 1.16k August vintage cushion (1.53 total) i’m a size 7. The second pic is my dream ring (3 carat AVC resting on a pave setting)

I think anywherw around 2 carats would be a great size. Best thing would be to go try on rings. Everyone has their own perfernences.
I’m a size 6.5 and over 5’9″ with a 1.75 carat center diamond, although it’s an oval I like the coverage 🙂

bibbithebee: I haven’t personally got an emerald but they do look gorgeous. Just out of wonder, has she tried an emerald and other cuts on? Sometimes you try a shape on because you always loved it but hated the look on your own finger.
I think a 2ct would look lovely on that sized finger but it depends on what her budget is. Sadly they don’t come cheap and you often have to get higher stats on an emerald such as clarity because they show inclusions more.

I have 1.25 on my 6.5 finger and I love it. Guess if we were really rich going bigger might seem natural and reasonable but here is mine. You do have to go up in stats on emerald bc flaws and color really show.

Emerald cuts are lovely but they do face up smaller than other cuts. If I had an unlimited budget, I would probably go around 3 carats with an emerald. What would she want to do as far as the setting is concerned? That would definitely factor in, too. FWIW, I wear a 7.5.
Your friend should take a look at diamdb.com – she can put it the size and cut of a stone and see the actua, size on her finger.

I agree with PP on the need for a higher clarity and smaller “face up” on emerald cuts. However, I would suggest 3 to 3.5 carats if she wants to maximize finger coverage w/out totally breaking the bank.

You
This is from the website I mention below. It’s a 9 by 7 (3 carat) emerald on a size 7 finger 🙂 I would get this size! You can go to http://www.diamdb.com/! You can enter in different shaped diamonds of all sizes on different sized fingers! It’s great!
The only problem is you have to remember the diamond will look slightly bigger than the picture given because it will be 3D not 2D

Or you could save money and get a 2 carat with a halo!

Ring is sized to 6.5(I think my finger is 6, though), and this is a half carat. I’d like to go bigger eventually, but I’m actually quite pleased with how substantial it looks(in my opinion, at least)

bibbithebee: I’m thinking 3 carats, plus or minus a bit, would be about the ideal size with an emerald cut for a size 7 finger.

I would not go higher than three carats. I have size seven fingers, a ring an ex-boyfriend gave me was a bit bigger than 8mm x 10mm, and it was too big for my fingers. It looked like a cocktail ring.

bibbithebee: mrssam‘s ring comes to mind! It’s 3 carats on a size 4. If I was your friend, I’d prefer a stone around 5-7 carats if an emerald cut because they face up smaller than other cuts.
This is Mrssam’s ring and a link to her post.
3 carat emerald cut on size 4 finger update^^
