Hi bees! Today my BF’s grandmother gave him an heirloom diamond. He sent me a few pictures of it but we have no idea what size it is. We’re thinking somewhere between .5-1 carats. Any idea? Thanks for your input 🙂

if you can measure the size in millimeters, you should be able to get a ballpark size. holding it up next to a dime doesn’t show much.

Measure it in MMs
It might not tell you precisely, but it will give you a general idea.

@This Time Round:
Thanks, ladies! I am not sure if he’ll be willing to do that or not. Just thought I’d post the pics to see if anyone could take a ballpark guess.

Honestly, that’s hard to tell. In the first pic, I would consider guessing 1ct. In the second, I’d consider guessing closer to 2.

/edit – Damn, I’m tired and dizzy from wine; I first thought that coin was a quarter, but it is a dime. In that case, .83c stone. Which is close to the size of my stone. Love those .4 to .9 ranges.

@MrsZynxy: I would guess a carat!

have you tried measuring it with a ruler?

@mypinkshoes: Boyfriend or Best Friend is going to measure it tomorrow, I was just too impatient!!

There’s a great free Android app called Smart Ruler. You can place the diamond directly on the ruler on your phone and see how many mm’s it is.
Or, a physical ruler, yeah. A magnifying glass or loupe might be handy too.

I’m going to guess smaller, like .4 carat. My diamond is 2 carats and it would take up roughly half the width of a dime.
