I am using 8″ & 12″ lanterns. The 8″ is actually pretty small to me.. I ordered mine through http://www.paperlanternstore.com & their prices are great! Plus they have a ton of color options.. I want to say for 24, with shipping I paid around $32 I think..

If you are using them in a patio type area though I think 8″ & 12″ would be good to use.. I was skeptical about my 8″ ones but ours will be outdoors also & the area isn’t really high & my aunt insists that if I go bigger than 12″ it’ll be too over powering.

I’m ordering 16 and 24 inch lanterns in two different colors for a big venue indoors.  For your patio setting, I wouldn’t go bigger than 12 inches.

Do you have a picture of the space you will be decorating?

I am using a total of 32 lanterns in 4 different colors (fuschia, turquoise, orange, and green) in sizes ranging from 12″ to 20″. We are using a clear top tent to keep it from being overpowering. My inspiration below

Since the structure isn’t very high I would think 8″ would be okay because you don’t want it to be too over powering.. If you go above 12″ at all I would do it sparingly.

To me anything under 14″ was too small for my taste.

I also like variety, so I used 14″ 18″ 22″ and 24″ ones (about 60 in all spread all over the place.) Then we did clusters under the covered part (which looks similar to yours.)

For that space, I would recommend a combination of 8″, 12″ and 14″ (you can do more of the smaller ones, but I would include at least 8 of the bigger ones). You’ll be surprised at how puny the 8″ lanterns look once they’re hung, plus I think using at least three different sizes looks more interesting.

The blue ones in the pictures below are the smallest at 10″ and the white ones are the biggest at 18″. The green ones are 12″ and the orange ones are 16″.

I second the vote for http://www.paperlanternstore.com for the cheapest source. I also bought some from http://www.asianideas.com because they had certain colors/sizes that were out of stock on the other site. Good luck!

Yeah I’d love to be able to use the bigger ones but I don’t want it to be too much.. Plus I don’t have a ton of space I have to decorate luckily! I have a few pictures of the outside.. Its really open though, we have the option of using the inside of the place if it were to rain but the plan is to do everything outside. We are keeping the food, the bar, and the cake inside with a few tables just in case anyone wants to go in for a bit. The place is kind of a cabin, with a long deck that leads you to where the ceremony/reception will be.

This is the huge tree & chimney behind where everyone is sitting.. There are more trees further back but I didn’t get pictures of it or even the porch or the building itself! lol

@Faeridrops: I WAS planning on using the battery operated LED lights, but I found out last night that my Fiance finagled some free lighting with our tent package, so I don’t plan on putting any lights in them at all. I am happy about that b/c it means that I can go ahead and string them up on the “hoop” that I am making without having to worry about lights the day of =) Go FI!

Thanks! Yeah I absolutely love it there! My dad is retired so I keep trying to tell him he should really move up there & retire. lol I probably could get away with the next size up, but there is just such a drastic difference in size that I don’t want to chance it looking bad.. Luckily the lady that runs the show there said that we are more than welcome to come out during some of the weddings through out the spring & summer to see how they set up so that may make me change my mind.
