I have a diamond promise ring and a white sapphire engagement ring so I can comment from both sides of the fence.

My diamond (7 stone cluster and then some chanel sets) rarely needs to be cleaned buuuuuut the center stone in the cluster is cracked! I normall work with ACE students but was off for the summer so worked as a vet tech.  through a random issue with a dog, the back of my hand was slammed against a stainless steel table hard enough to bruise and crack the centerstone (last time I actually wore my ring to work-became a resident of my scrub collar lol) so my opion is that while a stone may be super durable-the angle of a blow matters.

my engagement ring does not stay clean as well but is great in the academic environment. FI chose the promise ring (was a suprise before he found out that Im not a huge fan of diamons) and was very apprehensive about the white sapphire until I had a jewler explain the differences to him.  We know it is not as “hard” as  a diamond but our care plan covers lost or damaged stones in my e-ring.

personally, Id say get what you like and then invest in a GOOD care plan.  you are the one who has to wear it forever.  personally-Im not a fan of all the colors reflected in a diamond and like white reflection.  I work with a woman who loves her silver topaz.  Chosing the stone is an entirely personal choice.  🙂 goodness knows though that I combed these ring threads like crazy before I made a choice.

I have an aqua, so its about a 7. I have worn it for just over a year and it has held up beautifully! I know aquas cloud and scratch long term so I have accepted the fact that I may have to have it replaced eventually, but for now its just like the day I got it!

Moissanite. Plenty hard enough and incredibly beautiful I might add.

I have had my moissanite ring since last mid November. No chips…cracks or scratches. It still looks as good as the day we bought it. Question for you…why is asha rated harder than moissanite on your poll? My understanding is that moissanite is harder than asha.

I have diamonds and platinum, holding up great.  The platinum is a little scratched, though.  I’ve noticed my platinum wedding rings are more easily scratched than my white gold rhr’s are.
